2007 New York Auto Show: Buick Supers

Buick just released more details on the up coming Lucerne Super and the LaCrosse Super models. Both will have V8 engines, with the Lucerne Super getting a 4.6-liter V8 that makes 292 hp at 6,300 rpm and 288 lb-ft of torque at 4,500 rpm, while the LaCrosse Super gets a 5.3-liter V8 that churns out 300 horses at 5,600 rpm and 323 pound-feet of torque at 4,400 rpm.

Slowly but surely Buick is finding their mojo. Even the large waterfall grilles shown on these new 2008 models are beginning to approximate the ultimate Buick grille from the 1950s, that being the 1950 model in which the grille was an integral part of the bumper...

I told you it'd be a Buick "SS" line, didn't I?

I was a little dissapointed especially with the Lucerne super. I know they can squeeze more horsepower than the 17 horses they claimed to have added. i think they could have at least squeezed 20 to 25 horsepower out of that motor but other than that they look nice and it might bring some much needed sales to buick

All we're going to see now is 80 year old guys going faster than they need to. This doesn't appeal to younger buyers, especially when they can already get a crappy FWD V8 under the Chevy brand for less money... although they ARE getting rid of the FWD Impala, so I guess all those "power through the front wheels" fans can just migrate to Buick for the time being.

I guess Buick finally found its niche. Too bad it's the one everyone else already knew they occupied. A round of golf after we take our stroll through memory lane, anyone?

flicmod you must be thinking of the Monte carlo or the montepala as some people like to call it. its a shame that these supers will probably be bought by 70 year olds that should not be going any faster than 10 miles per hour

No, I'm definitely thinking of the Impala. The current Impala SS, to be exact.

oh ok The motnepala is going out of production as well so i was naturally thinking of that. Anyway i bet these supers will have better looking interiors than there non super counterparts. But however i'm still disappointed in the fact that GM could only pull 17 additional horses out of the lucerne motor. i know the lucerne is not a race car but seeing thats a northstar V8 under the hood they could have squeezed at least 20 to 25 horses out of that motor. Also a 300 horsepower lacross is neat btu these cars will probaly attract 70 year olds who really should not be going faster than 10 miles per hour

I guess this could be cool. Still, one has to wonder how the new-found power will affect fuel economy, because with prices often near or over $3.00-per-gallon, IT IS ALL ABOUT the MPGs.

Don't get me wrong, even with FWD, a 300hp LaCrosse will be fun, but let's at least move the "gas-guzzler" tax minimum up by a few MPGs and pressure GM to get to work on, say, a 130-150hp version that sips gas, handles terrifically, and still has plenty of speed for 99-percent of the driving that real people in the real world do.

At this point in the game these should be, minimally, 35 MPG cars.

I was referring to the phase-out of the FWD Impala and the introduction of the RWD Impala, a la the new G8. Just to clarify.

I, too, was disappointed by a mere 17HP increase. I was also disappointed that the Lucerne Super didn't have a big of an increase as the Lacrosse. That could confuse customers.

I've been saying for awhile now that the Northstar needs updated. I don't think it can compete in this world right now. My idea was to rework some of the flow through the engine, making it more efficient, and then direct inject the sucker. More refinement is all it needs.

Nice updates. Not nice enough to make me trade in my 2006 LaCrosse CXS though. I am waiting for an Epsilon II LaCrosse to come out or a RWD Lucerne before I change cars again. I am 36 and glad I gave Buick a shot.

Plenty of people pay more money for a glorified Camry... cough Lexus.

I like driving my glorified Impala.

I was hoping for a Enclave Super to be revealed at the show. That is, of course assuming that there will be one. Rumor has it that there will be a V8 for the Enclave along with the GMC Acadia Denali.
