2007 Geneva Auto Show: 2008 BMW M5 wagon

So here's the problem as we see it with the 2008 BMW M5 wagon. Sure, it has the same 500-horsepower V10 as the sedan, the same set of monster 19-inch wheels and tires and the same ability to combine both assets into a lovely cloud of puffy white smoke. This M5 also has an obvious foe in its Mercedes-Benz AMG counterpart, in this case the E63 wagon. But unlike the sedans where the M5's superior handling and road feel win over true enthusiasts, the wagons are merely the coolest cars you can buy your wife without getting flak...
She gets a nice luxury car with room for the stroller and you get to embarrass jokers in Ferraris at stoplights. At that point, who wants to deal with the M5's lame SMG gearbox? Surely not your wife, and probably not you either. Oh, and then there's the M5 wagon's "not for the U.S. market" thing. Score one for the E63. — Ed Hellwig, Senior Editor

Thats a shame... They should offer this in the US, because it certainly will have competition with the E63. Also, whats with the SMG??? They should really offer a manumatic like the Benz, especially for the wagon.

They've already released a manual M5 sedan (albeit with great resentment), so why not the wagon?

No E61 (BMW chassis designation...I was not trying to type "E63" as in the Merc E63) M5 Touring in the States. :(

Thanks for at least writing an entry about it, Ed!

I like the wagon even better than the sedan, because the ugly hump-back trunk it gone. Too bad.

I can understand why they don't sell it here, though - it would only steal a few X5 sales, and those are probably higher-margin sales.

At least the soccer moms wont be late to soccer practice.

^ Since it'll only be available on the other side of the pond, I guess we should replace "soccer" with "football!"
