A case for a GM-Chrysler deal

As we all know, on the surface a GM-Chrysler deal makes no sense at all, and for all the obvious reasons. However Michelle Krebs in her latest AutoObserver article puts forth an interesting scenario that I hadn't thought of.

If either a Korean or Chinese (or any "foreign") automaker were to buy Chrysler, that could really put a big hurt on what's left of the domestic auto industry, as that buyer would instantly have a huge access to the American auto market. Think about it...
That buyer could immediately sell cars via an already very large and very established dealer network. The result could be devastating for the long-term security/health of both Ford and GM.

GM, however, could step in and take that threat away by purchasing Chrysler. Of course the next question is, once they have Chrysler, what do they do with it? As Michelle points out, it ain't goin' to be pretty... You can expect product and employee slashing that will make Sherman's march through Georgia look like a Sunday stroll in the park...

It seems Peter DeLorenzo of Autoextremist.com is also thinking along the same lines as Michelle. His story is here.

Whoever gets it, it'll be a bad time for Chrysler employees.

But it's already foreign-owned (i.e. German).

I'd be pretty excited to see Honda buy Jeep. Has Honda been a prospector?

That's true ateixeria. But the german company in question didn't use it to expand their presence in our market, and already had a well-established name here anyway (that didn't really *need* to change).

If the Japanese / Koreans (especially the latter) were to buy Chrysler, the reasons would very likely fit with the above- a way to get instant access to a much larger piece of the pie.
