On May 27th of this year, a Corvette that looks just like this one will pace the Indianapolis 500. It will be the ninth time and the fourth year in a row that a Corvette has paced the Indy 500, but it's the first time since 1998 that you can buy a replica of the special edition. In 1998 the Corvette pace-car replica was purple with bright yellow wheels and seats. It was like driving around in a 300-hp Shaquille O'Neal, or Kobe Bryant depending on your taste in Lakers superstars of the time...
This year's pace car, dressed up in Atomic Orange with gold-ribbon graphics, is inarguably more tasteful, but only by a tick or two. Its wretch factor is still at the top of the Inside Line Vomit-o-meter. Maybe that's why GM didn't include the Corvette Pace Car in its press conference; instead the convertible sits off to the side on an elaborate display beside the Ron Fellows special-edition Z06.
Five hundred will be built. Word is Jay Leno is already having one fitted with a jet engine that runs on E85. Scott Oldham, Editor in Chief, Inside Line
