Pontiac didn't have a press conference for the new Torrent GXP. But we'll tell you about it anyway.
It's the performance version of the brand's fairly innocuous crossover SUV and it's powered by GMs new 3.6-liter V6. The engine, which is also used in the new Saturn Aura and Saturn Outlook, features double-overhead cams and variable valve timing to make 263 hp...
A sculpted hood, a revised front fascia and deep-set grille inserts are added, while the roof rack has been ditched for a lower profile. The truck also sits lower on blingin' 18-inch aluminum five-spoke wheels and rides on a stiffer suspension. Inside there are sportier seats, a leather-wrapped, three-spoke steering wheel and GXP-specific instruments, including a 140-mph speedometer.

So square, and yet not... Looks fit to be a car released in the year 2000.

But ya gotta admit that it looks like a credible improvement on the otherwise yawn-inducing Torrent.

I think the current model looks better with the fake "chrome" grill guard. Substantial powertrain improvement, but not much else.

I would not be suprised if the Equinox SS has the same engine. almost all of the GXP cars except the solstice basically have the same engine suspension and other general parts as SS cars. When this torrent and its companion the G^ come out they are going to be awesome just get rid of the wing on the G6 please

I'm tired of GM re badging cars and calling them a "different car", i think GM needs to get some original ideas.

A clone of the Equinox Sport, I guess. Hopefully they will be less prone to tipping compared to current models, and a stronger side structure.

2008 Torrent GXP now in production seems to me this version will fix what was needed. 3.6 w/ 6sp auto - 1 inch lower to ground with 18 inch tires & wheels also tweeking the suspension & exhaust. the seats should be an improvment also. I'm looking forward to seeing this version, maybe I'll trade my G6-----GLR
