Detroit Auto Show: Mitsubishi Unveils its 2008 Lancer

As part of a three year restructuring plan, Mitsubishi says a main focus is platform sharing among new global models. Making good on that promise, the 2008 Mitsubishi Lancer is set to ride on the all-new 2007 Mitsubishi Outlander platform. This platform is expected to carry several future vehicles, with a potential sales volume of three million vehicles worldwide.

Mitsubishi says the 2008 Lancer is new from the rubber to the roof with more than 50 new features and enhancements...

The new lightweight 152-horsepower engine weighs 60 pounds less than the previous powerplant, but is 26 percent more powerful. There's also a new continuously variable transmission (CVT) offered which can be controlled by paddle shifters.

And good news. It looks far sportier and less econo-boxy than the old Lancer. -- Kelly Toepke
