We spotted GM product demi-God Bob Lutz (plus entourage) nosing around the Toyota stand, lingering, in particular, at the Tundra pickup truck display.
After checking out the interior of one truck he checked out the rolling chassis display of another. Pointing at a piece of the Tundra frame, Lutz said to his minions, "See? See how they weld this?"

Take notes, Bob. That actually is a pretty good story.

The frame has a fancy name, I forget what its called, but its on the Toyota website and it looks to be more than substantial enough. I think this truck is going to make a bigger splash than everyone thought.

A fancy name and good looks doesn't mean that it's adequate or competent. When all the marketing is done, it will have to settle down to the work just like everybody else.

I'm impressed that Lutz would go over there, in broad saylight, and check it out. You're never too old to learn something. Keep your enemies close....
Sounds like Toyota is more than happy to open it's closets, get feedback, and test it's truck's mettle.
The Tundra is far from perfect, but it is finally on par, if not raising it, with the domestics.

Nothing wrong with doing your research in broad daylight, especially when it's free.
Bob complemented the tundra in CNN's news article.

I think Mr. Lutz is really all-American. The Tundra is all-American, Japanese nationals only forked over the money to develop it. So nothing wrong with complementing another American piece of work.

I love it! That shows you exactly why GM is going to come out of its tough times and emerge in profit. Many execs would snub other products in order to levitate their own. Those who are willing to take notice of what is going on around them will find success. Kudos to you Bob!

Yep. The "ignore-it-and-maybe-it'll-go-away" mentality would be sure to finish GM off. This is a much better attitude. Take note of what they do right (or wrong) and learn from them, integrating the good into your own stuff. That's a lot of what made the imports so strong over the years too.

"Keep your friends close, keep your enemies closer". Nothing wrong with seeing what the competition is up to, all manufactureres do it. I will also add that it is interesting to see GM having a great interest in the Toyota. They should have done this YEARS ago.

If Bob Lutz was anything more than puppet for GM's stoggey board, I'd be more optimistic. He has no control, no power, and worse of all, no clout. The fish rots from the head.
