2007 Chicago Auto Show: Special-edition Hummer H2

The Hummer H2 was once the vehicle of the moment, with people clamoring to be the first to buy this cartoonish SUV. That moment has passed. Actually it passed some time ago.

Predictably then, Hummer is resorting to the oldest trick in the car business to try to create some excitement around the H2: the Limited Edition model...

Called the "Victory Red Limited Edition," the tarted-up 2007 model will be shown in all its shiny, red glory at February's Chicago Auto Show.

If we seem a bit, um, dispassionate about the whole thing, that might be because we had to write this very some story last time Hummer released a limited edition H2, although that one was blue. In addition to the Victory Red paint covering the body and assist step, the limited edition also comes-on full-shiny with chrome door handles, hood latches, hood louver, exterior side vents and 17-inch wheels. For $66,030 (for the SUV model) or $65,575 (for the quasi-pickup SUT model), the limited edition also comes with a standard rearview camera and "carbon fiber appearance" interior trim.

It goes on sale in February and while Hummer calls it a limited-edition model, we suspect its ultimate production number will be limited only by how many buyers the company can find for it. -- Daniel Pund, Senior Editor, Detroit

Hmm maybe this is an Omen to GM but the days of the Hummer a vechicle that has faithfully made Greenpeace and enviromentalists kiss its giant metallic butt is over. people are more knowledgable about mileage and unless you have a supersized account to fill this things gas tank then i say the Hummer line is finished and besides I hate RED why not make the thing black and make improvments to the drivetrain rather than put cheap and tacky exterior and interior improvements

Thing I don't get about people harshing on the Hummer H2 for crappy gas mileage, is that most large SUVs and pick up trucks get the same if not worse. The Chevy Silverado on the long term test fleet is getting maybe 14mpg avg. The same as the previous generation Nissan Xterra, or even current Jeep Commander (which I think has had a low in the single digits).
But, I guess the Hummer is an easy target due to the perceived statement it makes.

Gas mileage is not the problem with Hummer. I think its due for a new look. And oh yeah, it must sucks to be poor.

Honda always releases a special edition the last year of any model. It's a clever way to purge all the accessories that didn't sell for that particular generation.

Now, if Hummer were doing that, I would commend them on the move (though I think it's absurd to pay a premium for extra "chrome"). Hummers are a very niche market. There was no reason for GM to make it into an entire division. Now they're learning why.

Interesting timing, with the whole Project (RED) thing getting so huge now... I almost thought it was related when I first saw the name, until common sense kicked me in the head.

They need to do a diesel Hummer. The Duramax would be a perfect fit.

The most ridiculous waste of space in the history of the automobile.

Notice how you can't buy them in Green? Even GM knows there the epitome of automotive gluttony.

yeahs they should do a diesel on the H2 or even better on the H3 and give the diesel Grand cherokee some competition

The H2 and the H3 to some extent are a waste for functionality. They are for looks pure and simple. I personally think the H2 is atrocious, but not because it gets bad milage. I much prefer the H3 although it's utlity is hampered by it's design as well.

A Duramax doesn't fit in the Hummer's engine bay. At least thats what I have heard. I wonder when the H2 will be redesigned on the GMT900 platform? Since it is based on the same platform as the previous GM trucks, it makes sense then that Hummer would follow suit and base a hummer off the same platform.

yeah the duramax did fit but only in the now out of production H1 alpha but your right in the case of the H2 and 3 the engine bay is too small what GM should do is try to make a diesel engine that can fit in these cars because as i said in my previous post Even though the Hummer has made greenpeace peta, etc faithfully kiss its giant metal butt over the years what is needed now is a new diesel engine. With said diesel Not only will customers have a alternative engine choice for the H2 and H3 but in the H3's case the new diesel will make it a direct competitor to the grand cherokee diesel that will be released by Jeep soon. and to clear a thing up I am not a enviromentalist. Also the current red edition while its great for people who want tacky exterior and interior improvements i think what they should have done is made improvements in the drive behavior of this thing because even though its not as much of a giant steel brick as the H1 was this thing is still a beast to drive in highway driving

I like the H3 cuz of its off roading capabilities, even tho it looks like it has just as horrible vision as the Toy Fj. But it has 2 more doors which I like. It needs a good diesel motor to replace that lame 5 cylinder.

It's absolutely histerical that a vehicle with the outlandish proportions of the H2 can't fit a diesel in the engine bay. The H3 sucks the exhaust of the FJ, cuz the FJ just keeps pulling away! Oh, and there's loads more room in the FJ than the H3. H2 = the Wannahummer, and the H3 is the gay-hummer, or Ghummer for short!

desmolicious says:

How is there loads more room in the FJ? it's a smaller vehicle.

"and the H3 is the gay-hummer, or Ghummer for short!"

That's funny... the only FJ owner I know happens to be gay. I'll have to ask him what he thinks of your opinion.

"They need to do a diesel Hummer. The Duramax would be a perfect fit." EXactly!

BTW have you seen the comparison of the Escallade, Hummer H2 and Range Rover SUV by Jeremy Clarkson? Check it out in youtube and then you will realize that the Caddy and Hummer SUV are only cool for the looks and their off road capabilities are nowhere close to Range Rover. Funny too.
