So you thought Subaru just made boxer-powered AWD cars? Not so; besides offering some bottom-feeder FWD cars with transverse and/or boxer engines in Japan, Subaru is now branching out into sport/racing karts; well, at least with sport/racing kart "engines."I wonder if this engine is based on one of their existing Robin multi-purpose engines, or if it is an all-new design?
Full story here .
Glad to see they're getting involved with more types of motorsports, even if it is only karts.

Glad to see it's a slant cylinder, i.e. atypical. Every thing they make has to have some unique character.
How 'bout an AWD kart, though? ;-)

They say in that press release that its based on the EX-21:

I'm using an EX-21 for a project at school... I was pretty surprised to see this little engine i've got to know so well show up on edmunds.com. These modifications they've made could come in very handy for my project, so thanks a lot for the heads-up.

It looks like the Robin EX21 engine with governor removed and a different cam. The Robin engine is a great design. Here's some more info on the Robin Subaru EX21 engine: http://www.key-ideas.com/Robin-EX-Engine-Swap.htm I have worked on a Robin EX21 engine and found it to be an excellent engine design with double ball bearing supported crankshaft, strong connecting rod, and many great features. The Robin KX21 engine should be very good since it is based on the Robin EX21 engine.
