I have one, and these can be far more distracting that any cell phone, because you have to use your fingers to type rather than just talk in to a microphone.
I can see how these are potentially dangerous and there should be restrictions.

My cel phone demands lots of attention when dialing, so it doesn't get used while I am driving.
A truly hands free system (like Onstar with voice recognition) seems the best way to "operate" a cel phone in a vehicle. But that doesn't eliminae an emotionally distracting conversation from causing real trouble.

I always see people trying to text message while driving on the freeway. Pretty scary.

Absolutely true kurt. But it removes the most distracting part of using the phone- that being the part that takes your eyes off the road and at least one hand off the controls. I know folks minds are less on their driving when holding a conversation (on a phone OR with a passenger), but I've seen far more near misses and what could've been near misses had other vehicles been next to their cars from drivers looking down at the phone and attempting to dial than from those yapping away. The yappers are more often just slow drivers, who become a bit oblivious to the lane they're in as their speed drops than anything.
