At the unveiling of the Sentra SE-R and Sentra SE-R Spec V Nissan announced that the Spec V will have the most power for the lowest price in the sport compact segment. That's true, but Honda's Civic Si is a near miss with 197 hp for $21,090.
With 200 horspower for $20,000, the Sentra SE-R Spec V is an undeniably impressive value. We smell a comparison test.

How about 205 hp for $19k? Now here's (still) the best value in the segment as far as power and price are concerned, the Chevy Cobalt.
Looks like you got beat by a couple grand, and a couple years, Nissan and Honda.

How do you figure $19k?
Cobalt SS Supercharged MSRP - $20,925
Add in the limited slip differential and curtain airbags which are both standard on the Si and you get $22,115.
Granted, you could probably buy if for a grand less than that and the Si is selling for MSRP. I imagine there's a reason for that, though.

I smell a comparison test as well, I hope the Honda Si comes out on top.

HP is good, and more importantly torque is quite good for a normally aspirated 4 banger.
But the styling leaves me cold, and this still has the twist beam rear axle originally derived from the Nissan Quest minivan. It's just not sophisticated enough for this class.
For straight line fans, bang for the buck, where handling isn't the top priority, it can be seen as a good value. I'd pass, though.

mikeswrong and drinkduff77-
you got it wrong mike and good catch drinkduff77
MSRP is $21,540 for a base Cobalt SS Supercharged per Chevrolet
Even if the Crapbolt SS was priced the same as the Sentra it would still be my last choice.
The Sentra looks very good on paper, the key will be how it actually performs and drives.
I actually think the styling is fine. The previous Sentra SE-R had decent equipment and did not compare well to the Mazda3 and Civic Si for refinement and driving enjoyment.
I was concerned that Nissan would price the SE-R and Spec V too high and under $20K for the Spec V is a fair price.
Now Nissan needs to lower the price on the regular Sentra and reconfigure the trim levels and options.

I love this car, this car beats the civic Si and it is just 5 horses less than a TURBOCHARGED cobalt, and it is TURBOCHARGED, so if we had a TURBOCHARGED SENTRA SPEC V, HOW MUCH HORSES ARE WE TALKING ABOUT???..... sentra wins.................

Cobalt is currently SUPERCHARGED, check your facts. The engine is also must likely underated because it puts out similar horsepower to the wheels as the 260hp turbocharged engine in the Solstice GXP/Sky Redline. BTW, the 260hp turbo will probably go into the 2008 Cobalt. Doubt your TURBOCHARGED SENTRA SPEC V will win then.

The last gen SER Q25 4 cylinder was a joke. The car could barely outrun the last Civic Si ( the hatchback with the economy K20 160hp 2.0 liter motor) and the Q25 didnt respond to modifications that well at all. Im sure this is a improved version but as of now Honda is still and will always be the king of the n/a four bangers.
Ive seen K20s ( 06 Civic Si/Acura RSX Type S motors) pump out 240+ wheel horsepower and 170ish lbft of torque at the WHEELS with just bolt ons and the Hondata KPro engine manegement system. Everything else was stock Honda! Impressive?
The Cobalt SS Supercharged isnt a bad car at all, it has its short comings (as all cars do) but I dont think it has to worry about the SER! The Cobalt SS is actually a good package.
