Next Toyota Supra may get hybrid power

UK's Auto Express is reporting that the next Toyota Supra will be hybrid-powered. Toyota's new model gets a tweaked version of the Lexus GS450h's 341bhp 3.5-litre V6 hybrid powertrain, giving it a unique combination of performance and economy.

0-60 in under 5 seconds, with a top speed of around 170 mph, and yet still get 30 mpg. Hmmm...

Being overpriced is what killed the last gen Supra. This one will suffer the same fate unless it brought in as a Lexus.

The people who would buy it can't afford it and the people who could afford it don't buy Toyota sports coupes, no matter how good they are.

Not only too pricey, but too heavy. The GS hybrid just took dead last place in a C&D comparo. Batteries are heavy and would hurt a small coupe even more than it hurts a big sedan.

Honda tried the performance hybrid with the hybrid Accord. Not a big seller, as I'm sure this one wont be. And I agree with wagon; the people that want a Supra (like me) can't afford a Supra (also like me). And I seriously doubt well-to-do individuals are gonna trade in their AMG for a Toyota.

I agree that no Toyota will get the serious sport-coupe buyer. Lexus is their dumping ground for products no sane person would buy. They're better off disguising it as a Lexus and hoping it hooks the luxury crowd.

Will they stop teasing us already. As pricey as the last Supra was, it may be better for Toyota to badge the Supra as the next Lexus SC, add some of the L-Finesse design, and make it a true contender of the German competition who don't seem to take Lexus seriously.

The new hybrib powered toyota supra is a straight-up statement. It is not only fast, economical, but also environmentally friendly. I think it is a forward thinking that everyone should embrace. I will definitely buy one. My wife owns a 2006 Toyota Prius and we both love it so much we don't mind buying another one. With all the benefits that comes along with it...everyone is entitled to their opinion but not their own facts! Hybrid is the future...it should be!

I think this is rediculous and untrue. The next Supra is supposed to be a 350Z/base Corvette fighter given it has 2 engine choices to choose from, a higher powered version (340+hp) of the wonderful 3.5 in the IS350 and the 5.0 liter 420hp V8 offered in the upcoming IS-F500 sedan/coupe. Im guessing prices should start in the low $30K range and top out in the high 40s.

Hybrid technology is great and all but I dont see it as a good thing as far as enthusiats go.

Ok...I've recently been reading up on toyota and their new concept cars and their plans for the future, and the car that has really been catching my attention is the Toyota FT-HS. They keep saying that that car may be the next supra, so my question is...well, is the toyota ft-hs the next supra or is the supra a whole nother concept. Whatever it is I love the ideas behind the new sports look and combining it with speed and not to mention keeping the environment in mind. Hybrid is a great idea, but I don't believe all the...kinks in hybrids are worked out, but I love this idea and really hope Toyota can produce this car or something like it in the near future.
