Mazda to develop their own hybrid, and perhaps gain some independence

According to Nikkei Business, Mazda will be developing their own hybrid; and this perhaps without the aid of FoMoCo. It sounds like Mazda is preparing to distance themselves from troubled Ford. With all that's happened in the past year, many auto industry experts don't expect the existing relationship that Mazda has with Ford to remain as is.

So, another subplot develops...
. Should be interesting to watch.

This is a bad idea. Even though I'll am for Mazda's independence, the costs here are prohibitively high and there are all kinds of patents protecting certain technologies.

I makes no sense to me that most Mazdas use the Duratec V6 engines and then they want to build their own hybrid. No sense at all.

This could be a big step for Mazda. I agree that Mazda will have a tough time out there in the "real world" all by itself, but another company may consider purchasing those shares straight from Ford.

On another note, I think Mazda is a fantastic company and I do believe that FoMoCo has been holding it back. There are a lot of potential customers who are weary of any Ford product.
