Paris auto show: Mercedes-Benz S 63 AMG

Even with 525 horsepower, the Mercedes-Benz S63 AMG got no love in Paris. Unlike the CL63 AMG which shares the same engine, the S63 didn't get a big intro from Dr. Z or even a spot on the main stage. Instead, it sat there in the corner like just another S-Class. It could have been the fact there's already the S65 AMG with a twin turbo V12 in the lineup, or maybe it's those turbine style wheels that leave it looking a little plain, but either way it was overlooked by most of the journalists in attendance. If you're looking for a real street sleeper in the six digit range, the S63 might be a good choice.

It only sat in the corner cuz everyone knows what it looks like and its not as new as the CL...but either way they are both gorgeous!!!

Ed,

I really like the aggressive grill and front end. The car looks muscular, and can obviously back it with 525hp. But with that, it also retains a bit of the wolf-in-sheep's-clothing appeal that blow revvers out a traffic light. Now the question is, will any come in stick?

I don't get it. Why would anyone wants to pay 40% more to get it over 388hp S550L?Or i should say, why someone wants to go 0 - 60 mph in less than 5 second in a luxury limo? because they can? For the same money, you can get a Z06 with an E350. Is it just me that i think this car is stupid?

a better question would be if you have the money why WOULDNT you want to go 0-60 in less than 5 seconds in a "luxury limo"? lol you could get an E350 and a z06, but you cant drive both those cars at the same time. plus any AMG model is just a cool car.

Will the S63 AMG that comes to American shores be the long or short wheelbase saloon? The vehicle displayed at the show is clearly the short wheelbase car, which has far less appeal to me than the long wheelbase. Regardless, it is a gorgeous car and a wonderful statement of Mercedes' superiorty in the over $70,000 luxury sedan category.

Does anyone get the logic of these AMG Benzes? So, I guess there is already an AMG S65 w/ twin-turbo V-12 and 604hp @ $182K on sale as we speak. Then you have the S550 and S600 normally-aspirated, "regular" S-Class sedans at $86K/382hp/V-8 and $140K/510hp/V12, respectively.

Now there's going to be a normally-aspirated AMG S63 with a V-8 at 525hp? Wonder how much that's going to cost. How many models do you really need? With the S600 already out there w/ very similar hp and a V-12, does AMG really have to hand-build a V-8 for this model?

Easier for me to see bridging the gap between S550 and S600 with perhaps an S580 putting out 450hp from a massaged V-8. Just seems like the AMG offerings make the whole Benz lineup overly complicated. Put one uber-AMG model at the top of each model range, make it the highest-output and most expensive of the range and be done with it. Right?
