Paris auto show: Audi R8

Audi chose to unveil its new R8 supercar at a fancy dinner last night so it didn't even bother with a press conference today. Whether you want to call it supreme confidence in the product or a stupid display of German arrogance, there's no arguing over the car itself. With its big 19-inch double spoke wheels, exquisitely detailed headlights and an optional two-tone color scheme, the R8 is one of the best looking production cars we've seen in a long time. And we're guessing it will look even better on the road. And when will that be? Not sure really since that's the stuff they usually tell you at the press conference.

I really love this car....and i want one...but i can't help but feel like it shouldn't be an Audi, but rather be the Little brother to the Bugatti Veyron. Audi owns both companies, and making a supercar with similar ingrediants to the Lambo Gallardo (which Audi also owns), i feel like this car should be one status company up. It will almost be like a Phaeton move, i think. Sure, the Phaeton was a fabulous car, but it was almost identical to an A8, and what would you prefer, a VW or an Audi? Well same sort of deal. Which would you prefer an new Audi supercar? Or a Lamborgini, an exciting flair of sound and color! I think it will still be outsold by the Gallardo, even if it is cheaper, because it is playing to the wrong audience. VW has stated that Bugatti has plans to make a cheaper supercar in the $125,000 Price range, which will turn a profit, unlike the Veyron which is really just a demonstration of power. If this was the Bugatti Chiron or Bugatti Varzi (both Bugatti racing champions, like Veyron), it would be MUCH more exclusive, and all it would need would be a bit of a facelift, and maybe a slightly bigger engine

Either way though, fantastic car

Typical super car that Audi would build, stoic, solid, ferociously fast and technologicaly advanced and yet starngely souless, and cold in its looks and execution.....

This car is beautiful, it really makes a case for itself just by looking at it. I'd take it over an M6, XLR-V or Vantage anyday.

Hmmm...beautiful? Really? I find quite a bit of awkwardness in this design. Yes, this car will be built like a vault, it will be very fast, will handle well, will have an interior to die for. But beautiful? Come on... and I actually am an Audi lover.

From the current posts, I guess I'll have to count myself in the minority here. I certainly applaud Audi for an attempt at a 2-seat supercar, but I'm not sure this design is going to put it where it wants to be.

From the rear, It looks like a new TT with strakes under the tail ligthts. In profile, there is a SEVERE cut line aft of the door panel that, to me, chops the flow in half, front to rear. And what IS that cut line? It ends up looking like that little rear suicide door on a Saturn Ion or Mazda RX-8 which, to my eyes, just does not work here. Finally, from the front, uh, well I guess you either love it or you don't. Personally, I don't, but evidently everyone else is this forum does so I'll reserve final judgement until I see one in the flesh.

Don't beat yourself up Vinnie. I'm not feelin' it either. I spent fully 30 seconds looking at it in Paris, then moved on.

I think I can't process the sedanish central nostril and bestraked mega air intakes with the the fact that this has a mid-mounted engine.

To me it looks like a Hot Wheels car. And not one of the favorites that I'd avoid scratching, but rather the all-purpose job that I'd crash into others, squish down extra-hard bending the axles as I push it around going "Bwwwwpppp," and ultimately use in the yard as a digging tool. Remember those?

Great Hot Wheels analogy, actualsize...hilarious. And nice catch on the enormous grill/intake on the nose of this thing while the car is MID-ENGINE! Never even crossed my mind, but a valid point. Might end up being one of those cars that grows on you over time, so again, I'll reserve final judgement until I see one. And living in Fort Lauderdale, FL, the yatch and Ferrarri capital of the world (true), I'm sure it will be soon.
