Paris auto show: 2008 Mercedes Benz CL63 AMG

When it came time to introduce the Mercedes-Benz CL63 AMG, DaimlerChrysler didn't bother with any big theatrics -- and it didn't need to. The car is a stunner all by itself, with 525 horsepower, unique exterior trim and a set of 20-inch wheels no aftermarket outfit could touch. If there was any disappointment with the CL63 AMG it would be the sound -- or lack thereof. Maybe it was just the already loud hall, but when the CL63 cruised onto the stage it was a little too quiet for our tastes. Wind it up on the highway and it's guaranteed to roar, but with competition like the Aston Martin V8 Vantage the CL63 is going to need all the help it can get.

Overweight, overpriced, and no personality....just a big but expensive blob of fat with no character. Long gone are graceful SEL big Benzes coupes from 80s...

balkanboy1 what are you talking about, this new coupe is sleek and graceful as hell. Just look at the swooping shape. The interior is great too.

I have to agree with balkanboy1 on this one. The new CL, regardless of model, leaves me flat and unimpressed, although the AMG bodywork on the CL63 model does lend a bit more character. For $120K+ or whatever this will cost, a few more of my (theoretical) dollars would easily go to the Continental GT. Mercedes could have done something really special with this model, but as this fast-growing price range has ever more competition, this Benz will deservedly be overshadowed.

it is more of a bigger clk to me. they better come up with a convertible to over shadow the coupe style.

The best "daily driver" around.
It may not look very impressive (I kinda miss the old body style) but this car is the most technologically advanced car in the world, and that includes the 6.3 V8. The Continental GT uses way too many Audi/VW parts and the Aston Vantage still uses the Ford parts bin (whats worse?). That leaves the Ferrari 612...Now theres a tough choice.

f404wam, agreed on the VW/Ford parts, but only to a point. The Conti/Aston aren't the only $100K+ coupes out there in this segment you know. How about a BMW M6, Maserati Coupe or the upcoming Porsche 928? Hell, I'd even buy a Merc CLS AMG before this thing. And to your point, have you seen the interior of the Bentley? I don't care if it borrowed parts from Daewoo, it's gorgeous. The Aston, too.

But I hear you loud and clear and agree that it's hard to get past these huge car companies' influence on classic brands. Look what GM has done to Saab. And the grill on the new Jag XK just LOOKS like a Ford oval. All they have to do is paint it blue and write Ford in it. Sad, very sad.

A great looking car like that is expected to be expensive...duh!

However, there are Mercedes Aftermarket parts - http://www.mbpartswarehouse.com/mercedes_aftermarketparts.htmlavailable that's easy on the pocket...
that would lessen the expenses in owning one like that...
