Lexus LS 460 self-parking system

You may have heard rumors about Lexus LS 460 being able to park itself. Well folks, it's not a rumor. Check out the videos here. This is pretty neat stuff, as the car can parallel-park without the driver touching the steering wheel...
Top that Mercedes, BMW, Audi, Cadillac and Lincoln.

Speaking of Lexus, the Wall Street Journal has an interesting—if not provocative article on the new Lexus, and how it may impact the competition.

I think it might hard to argue with the WSJ on this one. This new Lexus certainly wins the braggin' rights war hands down and, as impressive as the LS 460 is, it's still a bench warmer when compared to the AWD LS 600 hybrid. Yep, the battle of the luxo-titans will sure be fun to watch!

That is just *too* cool. I pride myself on being able to parallel park well, but my wife will avoid it unless absolutely necessary- she hates doing it. This system is right up her and other people with similar fear's alley.

I'm ambivalent about this. I suppose it's a neat trick, but it seems awfully slow. And can I just say how much I despise people backing into their spaces when there's a line of cars behind them? I wouldn't want people using this in heavy traffic.

Plus I worry about people driving cars at all if they aren't comfortable with parking. If someone is afraid of parallel parking they should go out and practice until they get better. Rear-view cameras are fine, but the car steering itself?...

I'm not one of those grumpy old men that hates all kinds of technology. But some days I do wish everyone had to drive a car with a manual transmission, no phone, and no radio, for at least their first 5 years behind the wheel. Learn how to drive for yourself first, then you can enjoy the other conveniences. Kind of like in math class - you have to do it by hand first before they let you use a calculator. Understand how it works and appreciate what is happening before you rely completely on technology.

First, to ahightower, I imagine most new owners will be rather old individuals who have indeed driven a manual tranny when they were young. I know I couldn't afford an $80K vehicle when I got out of college. Though I do agree that everyone should drive a manual at some point.

Secondly, that's amazing. I am curious though about the constant arrow pushing that was going on. Seems a bit kinked (as the angle of the screen probably distorts the driver from making concise corrections).

Finally, I think the title of the article (Toyota to Detroit: We're Gonna Bury You) is right on the mark. It's precisely the products from Japan that are decimating the proverbial Big Three (if they can so be called).

The Lexus LS 460 is a horrible riding automobile. Lexus should be ashamed to put their logo on this car. After 2 years of battle with the dealer and the manufacturer, The dealer finally replaced the 2 front seats which improved the ride, but the LS460 will never hold a candle to it's predecessor the LS430 which was and is truly a dream car to drive.
