FV Report: Automotive News weekly update

There were a couple interesting stories of note in this week's issue of Automotive News. The first involved the desire of foreign manufacturers to get into the heavy-duty pickup game -- or lack thereof in this case. According to supplier sources, Toyota has decided to halt development of a heavy-duty version of the next generation Tundra that was due to arrive as early as 2009. No explanation was given, but the program is on hold indefinitely according to the article...
Nissan also slowed down its plans to develop a heavy-duty version of the current Titan after its engineers determined that the frame wasn't suitable for the level of capability required in the heavy-duty segment. Nissan's plans now call for a heavy-duty version of the next-generation Titan due around 2009 or 2010.

Another story with relevant future product info concerns around Volvo. Turns out the troubles at Ford may affect Volvo's future portfolio. With many of its upcoming cars and SUVs based on Ford platforms, a sale of Volvo to another company could force the Swedish company to redesign next generation models with new underpinnings. The article points out that the new C70 and upcoming S80 are too far along to see any changes, but the S60 scheduled for 2009 could be affected. Other models that could be caught in the crossfire include the compact XC50 crossover due in the spring of 2008, the V70 wagon also due in early 2008 and the XC70 scheduled for late next year.
