Ford will exercise right to buy the Rover brand name

This is interesting. With all the rumors of Ford selling brands, or dropping brands, Ford is going to buy the Rover name.

In 2000 Ford bought Land Rover from BMW for $2.7 billion and along with that came the rights to buy the Rover brand name. BMW last month said that it had agreed to sell the name to an unspecified partner, and it looks like Ford was that partner...
The obvious question that comes to mind is why? According to a Ford spokesman: "We feel it is in interests of our Land Rover business to have the Rover brand," adding Ford had informed BMW about its decision on Monday. "We are acquiring it and we're not looking to sell it. We believe it is a valuable asset for us,"

Also, the Shanghai Automotive Industry Corp. (SAIC) is also reportedly interested in the Rover name, and this would end that for sure. There is speculation that Ford may just sit on the name, or sell it later at a good profit.
