New BMW X5

BMW has just announced their all-new X5 SAV. While all new, many might confuse this new model with the outgoing version, as they are so similar looking, especially in profile. The new X5 is powered by either a 350 hp 4.8L V8 or a 260 hp 3.0L inline-six. It will come standard with a 6-speed STEPTRONIC transmission...
A third-row rear seat will be an option. Ya gotta have that feature these days...

Snippet: The new BMW X5 is the only vehicle in its segment available with both Active Steering, developed by BMW, and AdaptiveDrive (a combination of Active Roll Stabilization and Electronic Damping Control). It is also the first SAV fitted with runflat tires as standard equipment.

Hmmm... Run-flats. I guess that means no spare of any kind will be offered. More info and lots of pixs here and here.

"they are so similar looking, especially in profile"

So when BMW changes the styling, they get criticized - should have been more subtle and less controversial. When they stay with very similar and successful styling, they get criticized - should have been more unique.

The only thing I hope they did change are the front seats. I rode with a friend and found the front passenger seat to be much too firm. While seat bottom extension feature was nifty, and I did have ample leg room and good thigh support, the "crevice" left for my butt to sink into was really uncomfortable.

My comment was not a criticism. it was merely an observation.

Bob has defended Bangle countless times, FWIW.

I like the front. It's a little "wavy" with the sheet metal lines, but visually interesting without overdoing it.

The profile is just OK. I do not like the thick D-pillar. The 3rd row passengers won't have much of a view. Or a place to put their heads, as the hatch angle eats up space.

Those rims are gigantic.

You see much more family resemblance to the X3, and I'm not sure I like that.

I've defended him because I too am a designer. I know where he's coming from and I speak his language. :)
