Maybe a smaller GM is best for everyone

Rich Homan of Inside Line offers an interesting as well as enlightening perspective on the recent GM et al. stuff.

Snippet:  Truth is, there are only two places left where GM is still "The General" — Detroit and China. But every time I visit Detroit, I see a few more Acura Integras and Toyota Corollas parked on the campus at Wayne State...
And GM's dominance in China will likely last only long enough for the world's greatest knockoff economy to reverse-engineer the hottest-selling Chevy models and slap a local Chery badge on them.

Snippet:  Being relieved of the pressures of the top spot and the incessant boardroom mantra of "Gotta stay on top...gotta stay on top..." may be the best thing to happen to GM since the company's finance arm discovered the insanely good profits of accrued interest over time.

Why not? I'm assuming by your screen name that you're a Mercedes fan. What if it were Mercedes and not Toyota that was challenging GM? Or some other "German" car company?

I'm not sure why GM matters. X amount of cars will be built and sold in the US regardless of whether GM lives or dies.

If Mercedes were challenging Toyota obviously i would be extremely happy. But I dont know I just dont like the whole idea of a Japanese automaker ruling the automotive industrie. Dont get me wrong i have nothing against the Japanese. They came to the game after the americans and Mercedes-Benz. The Benz name has been around for 120 years in the history of the automobile. What i'm trying to say is that i just dont think they deserve to be the worlds largest automaker.

Sure they have great quality and reliability and they've made great strides in both those areas and almost everyone respects Toyota and all the others for that.

Remember when it was all about the big three GM, Ford, and DaimlerChrysler thats what it should be but now Toyota just swooped in and literaly blasted away the competition and correct me if i'm wrong isn't Nissan like the fifth largest automaker.

Everyones forgeting all thats great about the american automakers just because they cant get the reliability and quality up and the germans have the best quality in the majoritie of they're cars but they cant get the reliabilitie up because all they care about is being the most technologically advanced(and that sure is bitting them in the @$$).

And I know its not just nationality the Japanese are the only ones taking time to correct they're mistakes in the past. I remember when i Mercedes-Benz was just as reliable as the Japanese are today.

The American companies need to focus one reliability and quality and not passing the others in total sales and once they realize that and they get that up(quality and reliability) they will be back on top.

Same goes for the Germans forget about being the most technologically advanced and focus on fixing that reliability issue and they will see more sales. Cuz who wants an unreliable car anyway And thats the reason GM is being takin doen by Toyota.

You all probably think i'm crazy because not only does this not make any sence but i dont even have a good reason not to like Toyota or Honda or Nissan.

I think thats it though maybe its just Toyota that I hate and not the rest like Honda and Nissan.

I think I need to go and sleep for a while to clear my mind and try again latter I dont know.

Mercedesman you have to be kidding. Toyota has indeed made great strides in all areas and have become very competitive in the global market, something GM is just trying to accomplish. Even though Im a Honda enthusiasts Im glad to see Toyota doing well. I think they deserve it. My father is a product planner for Toyota and his income paid my tuition so......

Toyota gave GM, Ford, an example of how a business should be run. So in the end this will make Ford and GM strive to make better products and get their companies in better shape.
