Top off your parking meter with your cell phone

If you live or venture into Vancouver, BC, you can now pay parking meters from your cellphone, get a text message warning the meter is about to expire and even top up the meter without going outside. Sounds pretty nifty...

Snippet: Motorists can call a city phone number, provide the number of the meter and order exactly as much time as they need, up to the normal limit of the meter. That means no more plugging a dollar or two into the meter when you intend to stay only 15 minutes but you're short of exact change...

"If you want to buy 17 minutes, you can buy 17 minutes," Verrus vice-president Neil Podmore said Monday.

If people use less time than they ordered, they can call to have the excess time deducted.

Users can set up accounts at a city website, www.vancouver.ca/paybyphone.

I like the idea of only paying for what you use. I bet they increase the fees to offset this, as cities are addicted to this income.
