Illinois seeing lots of flood damaged cars

We've all been warned to be on the look out for signs of flood damage when shopping for used cars, thanks primarily to Hurricane Katrina. Well, now it seems that Illinois has seen a dramatic increase in these vehicles showing up on used car lots. All the more reason to research any vehicle you might be interested in with Carfax.

Snippet: "These figures underscore just how important it is for consumers to find out all they can about a used car's history," said Chris Basso, media relations manager for Carfax...
"Flood damaged cars are often dried out, repaired cosmetically and then moved to another state to be sold to unsuspecting consumers. Not only do consumers end up putting their money down the drain but more importantly, they risk their safety." Flood water can cause major damage to vehicle engines, braking and electrical systems.

Are these "Buy here, Pay here" lots or are they large, franchised dealers? I would think it would be criminal to sell these things.

Not sure. My guess it's not dealer lots, but you never know...
