Stretch limos may also stretch the limits of safety

Autocross, anyone?

I've often wondered about just how safe are these stretch limos ? I'm especially concerned about some of the ultra-stretch versions. You would think the frame flex on some of those contraptions must be extreme. This is the first link I've seen that addresses some of these concerns...

Snippet: AM General, the South Bend, Ind., maker of Hummer, does not recommend the H1 or H2 SUVs be stretched. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the federal agency in charge of vehicle safety, does not inspect stretch limousines.

I've seen several Hummer H2 stretch limos around here...

I guess that makes stretch limos like all the other fun but dangerous things out there, like ice hockey, skydiving, mountain climbing, and riding a motorbike.

But seriously stretch limos aren't as fun as you might think them to be. Back in January of this year my friend invited me aboard a Cadillac Escalade stretch limo, with chrome dubs, a tv and a killer sound syste, for a two hour cruise by the gulf. It was cool at first, but then after an hour it got boring. I would much rather have been in a top down convertible, like a Ford Mustang, Nissan 350Z, or a Corvette, now that would have been fun!!

It's as safe as an ambulance. Ambulances are also uninspected, and explode into parts on impact.
The lesson is, just don't crash. And do a prayer before you board one.

Well, this is a lesser harm. The people inside would otherwise be driving drunk, most likely. So I'll take it as-is.
