Who says, when getting older, you have to slow down? Certainly not fans of the Chevrolet Corvette
, which seems to get betterâand dare I say youngerâwhich each succeeding year. Snippet: "...Did you know all of the astronauts in 1969 had Corvettes?"
The Corvette is clearly one of America's true automotive success stories. Who would have thought back in 1953, when this sports car was launched, that it would still be in production todayâand thriving, no less?

Is there anything significant about a 53rd anniversary? I mean if today was its birthday then sure, but...

Well the significance I can think of would be that the Corvette's first year of production was 1953.

Significance? Name another Chevy "car," or any GM, Ford or Chrysler car line for that matter, that's been around since 1953. I can't think of one. Trucks, yes. Cars, no. Yet the low-volume (sports car) Corvette soldiers on, just like the Energizer Bunny...

Name any car from any company thats been around this long. The Japs and Germs sure haven't done it.

The Corvette is one of the few American car names , along with the Mustang to actually have endured time. All the other classic, or even normal names have been discontinued and replaced by some new name, which messes up brand identity. American car companies keep changing model names with every (infrequent) redesign that a lot of history and recognition is lost. Examples - Cavalier became Cobalt, Taurus became Fusion, Neon became Caliber and there's probably more. Other names take a short hiatus which makes people forget them. Examples, T-Bird, Camaro, Impala

Yep, I couldn't agee more. I think carmakers are finally realizing it takes years (decades!) to build brand equity. Each time you start over with a new model name you're starting over from scratch.

The Corvette has become an American Icon like no other automobile since the Ford Model T. The reason I think, change for the betterment of the vehicle and not just for the sake of change itself.
Ford had a classic in the Thunderbird but sullied it with the four seater in the early sixties. And later just plain insulted it only to come back with a retro. Too little too late!!
Viva la vette
