for translations, so buyer beware... Subaru is working on a boxer diesel for the European market for 2007. The engine reportedly will be offered in the Legacy, and probably will be offered in the Forester too.
Rumors have it as a 2.2L engine, and most likely also turbocharged...
This engine is very important for Subaru, as nearly 40% of new cars sold in Europe are diesel-powered. If Subaru really wants to make a dent in that market, diesels are a must-have option. I would also hope that, once these engines prove themselves in Europe, that we would them offered in North America, as other clean diesels are on the way for here.
Here's more from the Austrian Subaru website.

Old news. According to reports in 2005, Isuzu was developing a Diesel boxer with Subaru.

I have to disagree with the previous post. The news was posted in jan of this year on the austrian website. True, there was some idea that subaru was developing a diesel boxer for some time, but this was just a confirmation of the talk that had come before. Many ideas that have been thrown around never made it this far.
Thanks Bob for keeping us posted on the subaru diesel news. As you know I am also one who would like to see a boxer diesel make its way stateside as well.
