The Mercury Montego hasn't exactly been lighting up the sales charts since its debut last year. Looks like help is on the way in the form of a mild refresh for the front and rear fascias. We also expect to see the Montego get the same 250 horsepower, 3.5-liter V6 as the 2007 Lincoln MKZ.

What's the use of the Mercury Montego anyways? I mean Ford already has the Fusion, 500 and has the MKZ. Does the competition need another 500-like sedan? I am also wondering why Mercury even exists? There's Lincoln already and Ford is reportedly making an upscale sedan which will become the flagship of Ford. Ford has already ceased Mercurys to Canada except for the Grand Marquis.

According to Ford in the Way Forward plan, the reason they decided to keep Mercury is that they did studies and found that about half the Mercury buyers were "conquest" buyers (i.e. they switched to Mercury from a competing brand), and over half were women. They need to give Mercury some unique vehicles, but I'm not hopeful.

What I would like to see from Mercury is a real luxury crossover, with a solid engine, interior and design. I dont mean a Mercury version of the Edge, but something larger and unique.
The even better alternative is for Mercury to build a RWD 2dr coupe on the Mustang platform with a V8, leather, aluminum, navigation and other premium features.
Models like these would actually give Mercury a reputation, unlike the one they have now which is just being rebadged Fords.

The 3.5l V6 can't arrive soon enough.

I liked the Montego, but wanted more power, so I'm looking at the Lincoln MKZ and MKX. The Montego is roomier than the other two and had better chash test results than the Fusion, I expect that the results would be the same for the Milan and MKZ, MKX as the Fusion. I would look at the Montego again if the new engine is available this fall. I hope it will be, I like the roominess of the Montego and the practicalness of the Lincoln MKX . The appearence wasn't a turnoff, just the power issue, although I welcome any improvement.

Looks pretty much the same to me; headlights seem a little different, the grill might be a more compressed waterfall. The rear end has the license plate on the bumper instead of the trunk area, tail lights may be clear, also lights near license plate area. I see the Sirius sattelite radio antenna, which I asked about when the car first came out.

Thanks for the photos. Teh 2008 models can't come soon enough for me. I liked the Five Hundred and Montego from the time I first saw the photos from the 2004 Auto shows, but the lack of power and associated engine noise, and the lack of various equipment have kept me from buying one. The looks were excellent on the side, only fair in front, and good in back for the Montego, but these photos make obvious that the front and rear will probably now also be excellent. The new 3.5 6 with the new Ford-GM 6-speed automatic should solve the noise and lack of power problems, now let's eee what Ford does about the equipment and features (e.g. a telescoping steering wheel).

personally, volvo's v8 will go great here!! In my opinion mercury vehicles are a better deal than their for counterparts Example: The mountaineer primer gets awd, v8, standard power 3rd row seats and 2 tone leather seats. The explorer limited has 4wd, v8, and 3rd row seats as pricy options and no 2tone leather. Did i mention the mountaineer is almost $350 cheaper? I'm glad mercury still exist. It'd be nice an edge twin came this way too!!

Volvo V-8-4v dont forget that little puppy originally was loaded into the Taurus SHO which was supplied by Yamaha. The sticker on the Volvo XC-90 still says Engine "Japan".

Like some folks said above, Mercury needs to ditch whatever its doing now and go for a new Cougar based off of Mustang. Also, Ford is letting itself suffer from GM syndrome. All of Lincoln and Mercury lineups are simply rebadged Fords. Mercury should actually go toward a more Pontiac theme to brimg high performance and distinctively stylish cars and trucks to the Ford Family.

I have a 2005 Mercury Montego(MM). This new pic isn't doing anything for me. There was a sketch out in 2005 that made the MM look like a BMW. I loved it. The 2005 MM is too light in power and in weight that's why i gave it to my wife. I would love to take the twin turbo 2.7 desiel from the Jaguar, and combine it with an electric motor, therefore turning it to a hybrid. This car could run on bio desiel.
The mercury meta 1 concept car gets 45mpg, with 248 horsepower. with torque of 341lbs and it is a desiel hybrid. These are impressive numbers. Currently, my 2005 MM gets 17mpg in city maybe 22 highway. The 3.5 cyclone motor is great, but the USA is having a greenhouse gases, and fuel criss. Come on Ford get that Meta One car out there. Also the same engine can be put the Ford Excursions and LIncoln Naviagators too. Finally VeraSun will be producing soy bio desiel. Come on America!

The Yamaha V8 in the XC90 is a different engine to the SHO.
I agree that the 3.5/6speed is needed like 2 years ago.

The best mercury in my view was the Cougar. I can't figure out why the cancelled it.
