New diesel trucks to get more expensive

As of next January, the price of diesel trucks will skyrocket. You can thank the new clean diesel fuel for this price spike, as the new clean diesel engines require (expensive) modifications. Illinois-based International Truck and Engine Corp., the largest manufacturer of school buses, is raising prices by $5,000 to $10,000 -- about an 8 percent average increase. Expect similar price increases from other truck makers...

Did price spikes like this happen in Europe? What's going on?

I think the key here is 8%. The price increase on a 1 ton diesel truck priced at $35,000 would be a little less than $3000 not trivial but not 5 to $10,000.

I think it would still be cost efficient for business use given better fuel mileage and longevity, but consumers might not feel the same way especially with fluctuating diesel prices unless mfgs eat the extra emissions equip cost.

IIRC, Mercedes was talking about injecting urea into the catalytic converter to reduce NOx making it a UDI (urine diesel injection). One advantage would be no need to make rest stops on long trips--just refill the tank. ;)
