There is most certainly a lot of money exchanging hands behind to scenes to secure rights to a particular word or name. Manufacturers fiercely defend brand equity for their models and associated logos. Of course, this isn't exclusive to the auto industry. You only need to look at the fiasco with Spike TV and the silly, arrogant lawsuit brought by a narcissistic Spike Lee saying that "people will think he's associated with the network".

With the retro craze, maybe Ford will reuse the Model T name to counter the Hornet, Challenger and Camaro.
Ford could charge extra for a black one.
