Is Chrysler going to overtake Ford?

With all the news being focused on the GM Toyota battle for world sales leadership, the Ford vs. Chrysler battle has been kind of lost.

"If Chrysler has some winners with its new products, it could pass Ford in North American production as soon as 12 months from now," Sean McAlinden, chief economist for the Center for Automotive Research in Ann Arbor, said Sunday.

Wow! We'd be right back to the late 1940's, with GM first, Chrysler second and Ford third.

But where are Studebaker, Nash, Packard, Hudson, Willys-Jeep, Crosley, Kaiser and Frazer? Oh yeah - they've been replaced (with Nash, Hudson, Willys-Jeep, Kaiser and Frazer previously folded into what is now DCX, in fact).

Toyota (soon #1), Nissan (quality issues, on the descent), Hyundai (on the ascent), Kia (on the ascent, working on quality issues, soon to be built in the USA), Honda and Subaru.

The players may have changed but the game's the same.

For all the wailing and gnashing of teeth over the new Charger, could it be that the Charger started to turn things around? They always say there's no such thing as bad PR :)

I don't know pf_flyer but the Charger was a missed target. They certainly corrected things with this Challanger prototype. If they can get this thing to production with better quality than Chrysler is known for, they could surpass Ford.
