Detroit - Build That Dodge Challenger!

Dodge Challenger Concept - Detroit Auto Show

A car like the Dodge Challenger isn't unveiled at a show like Detroit - it's unleashed.  It doesn't matter if you drove one the first time around or not.

Michael Castiglione, designer of the Dodge Challenger Concept's exterior. "I would have come up with a modern hood pin, revisited the oversized chrome gas cap which was so cool on the 1970 Challenger, and maybe worked a little on the door handles."

What do we have to say about that? Leave it alone - it's perfect.  If you're a MOPAR freak, this Challenger is for you.  For all the nay-sayers out there who were bellyaching last year about the Charger, get over it.  The Dodge Challenger has a rear-wheel-drive platform as found under the Dodge Charger, Dodge Magnum and Chrysler 300. It even has a production 6.1-liter V8 Hemi V8 under the hood...

Yeah, the same 425-horsepower version you get in a Dodge Charger SRT-8 and it's backed by a six-speed manual transmission.

Start chanting now: "Build it, build it, build it..."

Not enough for you?  Watch the Dodge Challenger video or view the Dodge Challenger photos

I own a 70 rt/se fo 30 years ,ove this car but think the grill needs to loose the cross hairs. pull the tail pipes into cut-outs like in 70, flip gas cap and wham it is a hit... add options like R/T with irs, and SE for upgrades even a T/A for the mustang owners to fear??? Go dodge I want one........

Make Alpine White (non-metallic) a color option.

Move Challenger scripts from quarters to front fenders.

Add a the '70's flip style gas cap.

That HEMI-orange does it for me, although I wonder how silver with a full carbon-fiber hood would look. Will they offer the 5.7 HEMI with a manual, too? Let's go, Dodge! Don't wimp out. BUILD IT!!

I can't belive it, looks right, good engine choice, need a 7 speed auto, after 3 knee ops I can't handle a manual in stop and go without massive knee pain, but keep the manul also. obtw one of the other division on DC has a good 7 speed in the parts bin.

Please add a convertable, CLK gets traded in on a Dodge ;-) Also in the parts bin are pop up roll over protection. ( you guys got a good parts bin to play with)

The gas cap is required.

Body Colors Plum crazy purple, Triple black, Pink Pather Pink, Brilliant Sivler, Bright white.

Strip Colors Hemi orange, black, silver, white

Build it, but take your time and make it a track and street, terror but have the ability to cruse.

I had a '70 Challenger RT a long time ago. "sniff" Hemi orange with black vinyl top. Please, please make the new one. Keep original colors. Loose the cross hairs in the grille. Need to have original tail lights or something real close. Also need the rt instrument panel as an option. Other than that, who do I sign my soul over to so I can get one.

The latest news (warning) that oil will soar to $100 a gallon (Iran thumbing their nose at the US and UN because of the threat of economic sanctions over the nuclear energy development) might put a dent in the sale of this car. I'd hate to see that. Emissions, insurance, and fuel economy concerns killed the original Challenger shortly after the engine got warm. Although I was too young to drive in the late '60s-early '70s, I really appreciated those cars. By the time I reached driving age, the Challenger was history, and the Charger was a luxury car with stripes. I was MIFFED beyond belief. I wouldn't trade my Acura RSX for one, but I would definitely find a place in my garage for a Challenger if Dodge does it like the concept that we're being teased with.

IT'S nice to see a 2 door car like this. this is one bad ride .and you need to do more like this. just like the charger .you need to make a 2 door charger along with the 4 door . and please don't change any thing abot this challenger it's a very very nice car. and i work for voss dodge . and if we had a car like this we could sell more cars and trucks and suvs. i had a 1970 cuda 440 and a 1970 roadrunner 440. and chevy and ford just don't have what you guys know so use it i love my mopars . and would love to see more old body cars come back to the show rooms . and i know everyone would buy them with all of your updates that you have now . and a price that a poor person can buy not like a viper . i would love to sit at the wheel of this ride at any time . and would love to drive down the road with my new challenger have a nice day.Ancel d reffett

I think that this car is a great comparrison to the original challengers. It has alot of the oldschool style with some newschool
technology. This muscle should be built over the last 4 years dodge
has won me back as a supporter, every one at dodge seems to
have it together. i was a diehard chevy fan but dodge has impressed me alot more than chevy lately, I sure hope to see this
car hit the street .. I would definately like to own one great job on this design I look forward to see what the future holds through
dodges eyes, I hope to see if the competition steps up also
It would be great to see more muscle from all of the big three..
please put this one on the market I want one...

I'd buy one if they make it. Dodge needs to get the quality right too but it has all the looks and stats I would need to switch from my GM ways! Build IT!

I am only 18, but am a Mopar enthusiast. I absolutely LOVE the new Challenger, and If Dodge doesnt build it, they are making a HUGE mistake. Only suggestions are to get the old school gas cap, loose the cross member in the grill (although it suits Dodge of today and past), consider a Shaker hood as an option (closest thing I think we'll get to a 'Cuda), also be sure to use original colors. I've also heard rumors of a 500hp big block V8--PLEASE!! I would definetly buy this car if it came out tomorrow!

This is one of the BEST looking MUSCLE CAR that I have seen in a long time. Being the DODGE FAN that I am, this is a car with very clean lines and a look of POWER! DON'T CHANGE ANYTHING!
I like it the way it is, a style that should NOT be DENIED!
The DODGE CHALLENGER should not be just a concept, it should become REALITY! "GO CHALLENGER "

All I can tell you is since mopar started having it's dependability issues I ran like heck from mopar... I reluctantly became a ford man... With that being said, BUILD the CHALLENGER, REKINDLE the MUSCLE car WAR, and I will never use that for letter word (FORD) in my vocabulary again... Unless I'm telling my buddies how I spanked a ford on my way to work .......... BUILD IT NOW....

Just !@#$% AWESOME! Saw the Challenger drawings online 6mths. ago and kept my fingers crossed. Have owned Chrysler products most of my life. ( A few generic motors & blue ovals during lean times ) I'm a diehard Pentastar man. From a 61 Valiant with a leaning tower ( converted to a 340 / 727 ) to an 05 Crossfire. Have just seen the real thing at NAIAS and was KNOCKED OUT ! The crew at DC hit this one sqare on the head. DON'T CHANGE IT ! The 6.1 6spd. 19's & 20's neon tail lamps...Great old school with just enough new. Couldn't see dash but please include FULL GUAGES. We NEED a mustang crusher! Huge HUGE mistake if this one is not built. The diesel pusher is up for sale this spring. Now 'bout a Chrysler CUDA???

This is the best remake of a car that I have ever seen. This is much better than the GTO that looks nothing like the original. It looks much better than the mustang that was supposed to be based in the original. This car is amazing if it came out tomorrow I would buy it right away. I LOVE this car!!

The Dodge Challenger concept vehicle is interesting, but looks a bit "dated". They need to "freshen-up" that exterior styling a bit. I would'nt want to ride around in a new car that looks "30 yrs old". I'd suggest they study the new generation 'stang or the camaro concept as guides. Ford & GM have both kept the "essence" of both pony cars while updating them for today. I tip my hat to both. Also, I don't care how popular it may be, who ever heard of a 4 door Charger? It's a mistake and it's horrible!

I am very impressed by the new Challenger. I am hoping that Daimler-Chrysler will produce the vehicle. We need an alternative to the Mustang. There are a lot of us out there that aren't Ford guy's and would like to have another Pony car option. Not to say that I don't like the New Mustang, but I am more of a Mopar Fan, rather than a Ford Fan. I believe that Dodge could really do well in the Pony car market if they compete with the cost of a Mustang. They should seriously consider making the Challenger available with the HO V-6 (3.5L), the Magnum V-8, the 5.7L Hemi, and the 6.1L Hemi as different options. With each of these options they should consider a Manual or Automatic (Autostick) Transmission for each of the engines. I believe the reason why the Mustang does so well is because of the low cost and the available V-6 option. If Dodge is going to take the Pony Car market seriously, then they will have to consider this.

If you build it I will buy it! Ilove retro cars especiallyfrom my teenage era. I have been holding off buying the new mustang for my mid-life crisis, but now that I have seen the Challenger, that's the car I would buy.

I have a 71 Plum Crazy 440 Challenger. I love my car, I love everything about her! She looks as good today as she did back then. You can all laugh at this, but I consider my Challenger a "girl's car".....but I am a woman. And this is my third Challenger....this one is my keeper.

Build this car, the only thing I would like to see is some RT stripes, the gas cap, a fin, hood pins, the wheels are ok....but I would rather see the old style wheels on it, the back lights I would rather see something more towards the 71 style and NO AUTOMATICS!!!!!! Bring the car the back all the way.....I want my new one to look as good the one I have. Please bring back the Panther Pink!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

milosmom1 says:

09:44 PM, 01/28/06

Oh, the only thing I would like to see different.....is the power steering box........every Challenger I have EVER owned had serious leaking problems with the power steering........that is one thing I do not want to see. And I really hope you addressed that windshield leak. And while I am at it......the bending hood hinges. Maybe the rattles.....not that I can hear anything, when the motor is running. The smell of exhaust fumes that linger on your clothes, is rather interesting but another thing I could live without. Make this one loud....real loud......I love when I start my car and car alarms go off!!! To me the noise adds to the beauty of the car! Challengers NEED to be loud!

Ford hit a homerun with the redisgning of the mustang last year and I think Dodge will do the same with this new Challenger. I'm a baby boomer and grew up with the 70's challenger and mustang. The retro look with the new technologies in the concept Challenger really gets me excited. You build it and I will buy it.

I cant agree more with (cominhome), MOPAR, needs to make this car as is!!! I dont know more that 3 people that dont like it. I even know some cheap, uptight guys that have the honda insight, and they said that they would get this car gas guzzle or not! I also agree with (petecamarostev ),The retro look with the new technologies in the concept Challenger really gets me excited. You build it and I will buy it. and spank!!! the Little PONY!!!!!

I have owned 4 Chrysler e-bodies, currently i have a 1970 Barracuda convertable and a hardtop. I hope Dodge decides to build the Challenger. Although the Hemi is the ultimate I hope they will also do a 6 cylinder with a manual transmission and a convertable would be fantastic. The challenger and Cudas always looked good as convertables.

This is the first new car under $50k that I've gotten excited about in many years!

It's obvious that this car is a hit. Chicago's official auto show poll shows the challenger on top in every category that it's competing in. (reference: www.vibes.com/drivechicago) Hopefully Chrysler will be the first American auto maker to really listen to what consumers want. I think the message is loud and clear: Please build this car!

I don't understand why everyone is so disapointed with the look of the new Challenger concept. Yes it does look like the old Challenger, but isn't that the idea about bringing back a name from the past? I love the old muscle cars, but for me to own one I would have to sell everything I own just to be able to afford one. Then I would have something that I wouldn't want to drive. Park it in the garage and take it out only if all the elements of rain, sun, humidity, and what house the moon is in. No if I have a nice ride, I would like to take it out anytime I like. Also if you buy a 1971 muscle car, you are getting 1971 technology. That is why I feel this is the best of both worlds. Looks of the past, with technology of today. I don't remember anyone complaining when VW brought back the "bug". And look at how many of them have been sold. Why bring back an old name and put it on a new car that looks nothing like what we remember. I for one would love to own an orginal 1971 Challenger as well as a 2007/8. One to put in the garage and one to take out and blow some doors off of the "retro" mustangs.

I WAS THINKING ABOUT BUYING ONE OF THE NEW CHARGERS
BUT AFTER SEEING THE CHALLENGER, I THINK I WILL WAIT, BECAUSE THIS LOOKS LIKE A MUSCLE CAR. MORE LIKE WHAT I WOULD WANT. I TEST DROVE THE CHARGER AND IT HANDLED
EXCELLENT AND HAD PLENTY OF POWER, IF THE CHALLENGER HAS HALF THE POWER AND HANDLED 1/10TH OF THE CHARGER I WOULD STILL BUY THE CHALLENGER, AND IF CHRYSLER DOESN'T BUILD THE CHALLENGER I'M NOT GOING TO BUY THE CHARGER. IN FACT I'LL GIVE UP CHRYSLER, YOU WOULD BE STUPID NOT TO BUILD IT. ALL THE CHEVY AND FORD GUYS AT WORK SAID THEY WOULD BUY IT, IF CHRYSLER MADE IT. I HAVE OWNED NOTHING BUT CRYSLER PRODUCTS, MOPAR, I OWN SEVERAL MUSCLE CARS AND ALSO A COUPLE OF NEW CARS, MY KIDS OWN MOPARS, I'VE GOTTEN ,MY NEIGHBORS AND FRIENDS TO SWITCH TO MOPARS. THIS WOULD BE A SLAP IN THE FACE IF YOU DIDN'T MAKE THIS CAR.
CHRYSLER SHOULD MAKE THEIR VERSION A CALL IT THE CUDA. AND MAKE THE SAME CAR WITH DIFFERENT BODY SKINS, YOU WOULD MAKE A KILLING ON THESE MUSCLE CARS OF THE FUTURE. EVERYBODY WOULD BUY ONE TO PUT NEXT TO THEIR OLD ONES. THINK ABOUT IT YOU MAKE ALOT OF MONEY. AND MAKE ALOT OF PEOPLE HAPPY. THANKS LETS BRING A BLAST FROM THE PAST.

I assume that by commenting I am in some way adding my voice to
the public consensus Daim/chry will draw on, in their decision to
produce this car. I was ten when mopar released the E bodies, immediately smitten by them. When I was old enough to buy one, they
had already become rarefied, the ones with Hemis to dear for my
modest pocket. I was able to buy a couple of 70 cudas but they
were real beaters, and as far as getting a hemi to stick in them...
Well I get married embark upon a difficult career, and dreams of
churning the pavement pistolgrip in hand fade off into the past.
But wait whats this? a second chance? yes oh yes. Please father
Mopar please make this car. There is a God.

I know that I am looking forward to it's release. I just hope that Dodge pulls together enough to not botch it up. Mustang looks good but needs to be shoulderd off the road by some real muscle coming from the Challenger.

moparrock says:

07:19 AM, 03/14/06

When I got out of high school in 1977 I wanted a challenger so bad I could taste it, but even used they were out of my price range so I bought a 73 dodge dart sport, 340 4-speed from a local used car lot for $1950. I still own that car today. I've raced it, shown it, dated in it, wrecked it, restored it, abused it, blown it up and loved every set of rear tires that I’ve burnt off of the rims. It is NOT, nor will it ever be for sale. Now we have reworked it from top to bottom and my 19-year-old son is the envy of all his friends. I’ve always driven mopars from mini vans to our 300M. My other three children also own them. When they become available my son and I are getting a matched pair, so help me God!

dodgeram1 says:

01:40 PM, 05/ 5/06

I have GOT to have one of these. I was SO close to putting some major moolah behind a black RT Charger, but I hate the tail end of those cars, just didn't match the rest of the package, but THIS one is amazing from front to back. Lets hope that Chrysler doesn't jack with the concept design too much (and maybe makes a few BLACK ones)
Build it! I'll buy it!
