It looks as if
Los Angles is making a strong bid to out-Detroit Detroit, as America's top auto show. The Organisation Internationale des Constructeurs d'Automobiles (OICA), the world automobile trade association, has officially named the Los Angeles Auto Show as one of its sanctioned international exhibitions for the 2006 auto show season. The recognition is effective for the 2007 LA Auto Show that will be held in November 2006. This is the first time that LA has gotten OICA approval...
So now both LA and Detroit will share that honor.
It will be interesting to see how the (new) November LA show will impact the Detroit show in terms of new model introductions. In the past it just seemed LA was always in a losing battle with Detroit, as the two shows were so close to one another. Detroit got most of the major auto debuts, and LA, for the most part, was left to clean up whatever scraps were left.
That may not be the case anymore. No question that LA in November is a far more pleasent place to be than Detroit in January. I guess time will tell.

C'mon, I must say that LA Auto Show and Detroit show should have been separated a LONG time ago. IMHO (in my honest opinion), Los Angeles IS, or rather SHOULD BE, America's top auto show- we, as in Southern California, DO have the largest automotive market...

NAIAS will still be number one, have no doubt, though LA will gain importance with this move.
LA has tended to focus on design, while Detroit got the big debuts and new model intros. In a way I hope LA does not lose its edge, and it keeps its non-conformist feel.

NAIAS is still in the hometown of the Big 3, no denying that, so NAIAS will probably keep its status as America's premier auto show.

I expect the Los Angeles Auto Show to get more importance because I can guess that companies like Honda, Toyota, Mazda, and Nissan (all of which have strong Southern California presence with multiple divisions located there) will want to show their latest concepts and new US-market production cars at a "local" show without the cost and expense of doing things at NAIAS.
