Magrath: Okay, by training you're a scholar of religion, and I'm a journalist. So let's dive headfirst into a heated, highly sensitive, incredibly difficult business topic: Detroit.
Magrath: You cannot be relevant with a headquarters in the midwest. You can't be impartial and forward-thinking when 8/10ths of the people in your area depend upon you and buy your products.

Sadlier: So, continuing its pattern of hiring random people to do important things, GM taps us to be the guys who make sure that the new GM is devoid of the stupid stuff that plagued old GM. Where do we start?
Magrath: I suppose we start from the outside in. It's how I pick my books and women; why not evaluate companies likewise?
Sadlier: Good, let's focus on outer beauty. It's the LA way.
Magrath
: GM has never really had a problem selling to GM fans, so the trick, it would seem, is to get non-GM folks to take the cars seriously. This means that Chevrolet, the largest and most important brand, needs to ditch the bowtie.
Sadlier
: The bowtie is obviously tainted, but I think it's potentially salvageable. Hire a design firm with money they don't have and sex it up.
Magrath
: Salvageable? Except for Colonel Sanders and Tucker Carlson, who wears a bowtie? And as you may recall from Jon Stewart's pummeling of Tucker
, the bowtie was a key part of Stewart's argument that what Tucker did on Crossfire is theater and not real news. Bowties are gags.
Magrath
: They could try to sex it up, but that would end with the thing being a bolo tie like you see at rodeos or in Arizona. There'd be turquoise and a cow skull...not good.
Magrath
: Besides James Bond, whom I don't think GM wants to evoke unless the new Camaro is a submersible, name something positive associated with a bowtie.
Sadlier
: Ummm...the tuxedo? 17th-century Croatian mercenaries
? Balzac
? Hell, the Playboy bunny wears a bowtie. This is too easy.
Sadlier
: The bowtie can rise again. Just not in its current form.
Magrath
: Fine, then if GM is sticking with a bowtie, Lexus should switch from a stylized "L" to a mawashi
.
Sadlier
: Deal.
Magrath
: And GM cars should be available only in black and white, or in Croatia.
Sadlier
: ...with your choice of a complimentary Playboy playmate or French novel.
Magrath
: I'm in.

I spent a lot of time in our long-term Cadillac SRX this weekend, including driving it to a gig at Hansen Dam in Pacoima. Since the stage was very far from the parking lot, the Caddy did a little "off-roading" to pick up my keyboard gear (which included a keyboard, stand, cord bag, mic stand, amp stand, amp, and chair). It all fit very comfortably with the seats laid flat, but if there had been a passenger in back, the split-fold would have been equally fine.
Try as I might to be critical, I can't find any problems with the SRX...

Our long-term SRX is back not only from itâs conquering of Oregon, but also from a trip to Martin Cadillac in Los Angeles. First and foremost was an oil-change, full synthetic as with our previous changes. We also needed them to look at issues surrounding our key-fob and sunroof. Both issues have been documented throughout this blog...

It's over. The 2007 Cadillac SRX is back in the Edmunds garage, safe and sound after a 2,076 mile there-and-back-again trip to visit our woodland neighbors to the north. Here's a recap:

Today is our last day of of Oregon tour in the 2007 Cadillac SRX. We're cruising down California's dead-straight Highway 99 through the central valley. With the end in sight, the wife and kids are tiring of all of the miles on the road and want to sleep in their own beds and ditch the suitcases. Me too.

Oregon is in our rear view mirror today as we head south for home in the 2007 Cadillac SRX. If there has been one recurring theme so far, it's this: the SRX drives very nicely, but the navigation system isn't good.

Day 2 of our Oregon trip in the 2007 Cadillac SRX was a bit more scenic as we made our way from Sacramento to Weed to Tule Lake. The SRX's direct steering and flat cornering attitude made easy work of the sweeping mountain roads near Mt. Shasta.
Wildlife viewing at Tule Lake gave us a chance to appreciate the Caddy's truly massive sliding moonroof. It opens nearly three feet - enough for three of us to adopt the classic Marlin Perkins safari pose at once.
But after creeping along for 6 or so miles with it open on this gravel road, it proved reluctant to close again...

It's day one of our annual Oregon road trip. So far, the 2007 Cadillac SRX is proving to be a pleasant companion indeed. The V6 engine makes decent power and I'm liking the way it rides and drives: less trucky than a big SUV and less bloated than a minivan.
Route 66-like attractions still exist just off the beaten path...

The impish key fob on our 2007 Cadillac SRX continues to taunt and tease us with its playful games. We'd reported that it
behaved unpredictably during a recent road trip to Wyoming
. That pattern continued last night. The fob worked fine when it came to locking the car after exit, but when entering, I was forced to use the key...

I suppose these guys came from OSH too?
The SRX is on the return trip now -- somewhere in Utah with poachable wireless. Short of an infuriating key fob failure and a few navigation-induced wild goose chases, the SRX is treating us right. Look for a full update when my provider is legit.

Took the SRX on vacation to my homeland -- Casper, Wyoming. Here's a not-so--uncommon sight in a Wyoming neighborhood. This guy was wandering through my Dad's front yard yesterday afternoon.
So far so good with the Cady...

I was supposed to drive up to San Francisco this weekend but for various reasons that didn't work out. I had requested the Cadillac SRX for the road trip for its comfort and because I prefer GM's navigation systems.
Well, I stayed local with the Caddy, so I made a trip to The Wine House in West LA to stock up on some essentials. It's an hour drive back to my place in the blaring sun so I was glad to see the Cadillac has a cover that pulls across the cargo area...

This weekend I got to spend some time in our long-term Cadillac SRX. It seems inconceivable, but this is the first Cadillac I've ever driven. I like it a lot. It drives very smoothly, handles well, good sight lines, it's got nice power, and everything is exactly where you want it...

I just took a pleasant road trip in our Cadillac SRX. Nothing extreme, just a jaunt from our Santa Monica office down to San Diego and back. It's about a 125 mile run each way and honestly I was hoping to take our Audi Q7. It's become my default choice for long highway runs...

Nothing takes the sting out of errand running and grocery shopping like the SRX. Here are a few of the features I found helpful during this long weekend:
Generous cargo area - the floor is kinda high but the storage bins underneath make staying organized easy.
Power rear lift gate - that cargo area is accessed via a large flip up rear door that opens with the remote, a button on the dash or just manually.
V6 engine - after 150 miles of short trips, parking lots and traffic jams the SRX's fuel consumption for the long weekend was about 16 miles per gallon...

A group of us went on a departmental event out of the office. On the way to the event I drove the Cadillac SRX, Karl Brauer was my front passenger, and Joe from our IT Web Production department, was in the back seat.

This Cadillac gets most of the important stuff right. Plenty of room, smooth V6 and all the features you would expect in a $45K luxury crossover vehicle. There are details, however, that could use a little work. I noticed this misaligned rocker switch over the weekend...
