Long-Term Road Tests

Daily updates on our fleet of cars and trucks

What Should We Buy Next?

 Jeep-SRT8-1.jpg

You may have noticed some changes here are the LTRTB. Cars are coming and going. In the past few weeks we've sold our Chevy Volt and have returned the Acura TSX Sport Wagon, Honda Odyssey Touring, Hyundai Equus Signature, Mini Cooper S Countryman All4, Mitsubishi Outlander Sport SE, Infiniti M56 and Nissan Juke SL AWD back home to their respective manufacturers. Plus, next Tuesday marks the end of our year long test of our Kia Optima SX.

Wrap ups on all of these 12 month tests are on the way, starting with the Mitsubishi Outlander Sport this Friday.

And we have new cars coming. Lots of them.

The cars we've ordered and are waiting patiently for are a Subaru Impreza, Toyota Prius Plug-in, Hyundal Veloster Turbo, VW Beetle Turbo, Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8, Infiniti JX and a Mitsubishi i.

But we also have some money in the bank, and our trigger finger is getting itchy. But what should be buy?

Right now our choices are a Chevy Malibu Eco, a Lexus GS350 F Sport, a BMW 328i and a Land Rover Evoque.

What do you think? Got any better ideas?

Get the Evoque, since you've failed to have a Land Rover since the LR3 so many years ago. I'd personally like to see an LR4 too, but the Lexus GS350 is more important.

HOW ABOUT A JAGUAR?!

I know this might sound kind of crazy, but I'd like to see a Scion iQ in the fleet. I know it's a city car, so I'd like to actually see it be used as a city car and see what drawbacks and advantages of owning a true city car is.

While I like BMWs, I'm kind of sick of reading about them on here. If you do get an Evoque, take it and the BMW X3 off-roading together and show what they can actually do, or not do off-road. Please.

I'm seriously in the market for a regular Grand Cherokee so that would've been nice, but I know MT and AW already had one last year. The SRT-8 will be fun to follow, though.

Definitely leave room for a new Escape when it comes out. How about either the Chevy or Ford half-ton diesel pickup? You need a truck.

Boxster Spyder?

I'll keep thinking...

It's not the newest car out there anymore, but I really wanted to see a 2012 Ford Focus added to the fleet, specifically one with the dual-clutch auto. I'd be very interested in finding out if the PowerShift is as much of a pain as everyone makes it out to be, and if the rest of the car makes up for it. I think it would be an interesting addition.

ctpaul says:

12:01 PM, 02/15/12

I know it would be another VW (you have two now with the Beetle?) but how about the new Passat? New car, new plant.... Enough with the BMW's, not interested in the Evoque. Malibu ehhh. Ford Focus Titanium (or whatever it is called) with the stick?

Jaguar XJ. Give the A8 some competition.

Of the cars mentioned I would go with the Evoque 2 door or the Lexus GS. However I think the Mazda CX5 needs to be on your list. Mazda is betting the farm on skyactiv (awful name by the way) and are even willing to license it. I want to know if it is all it's cracked to be, and the Cx5 is the first car developed from the ground up with skyactiv tech. As for the Bug, why not go with the 2.5? We know the turbo 2.0 is a sweet engine, but is the 2.5 really such a bad engine?

jojogovroom says:

Get a Land Rover Evoque. It has won numerous awards and it would be good to see if those awards are warranted.

While I think you owe it to yourselves to benchmark the new 3 Series (since it is the sedan against which so many others are judged) you should not spend your money on it because you seem to get BMWs loaned to you all the time. Get the Evoq, it's something different. Get the GS, I don't care that much about it but it's a significant change from it's predecessor. +1 on the Focus, especially while the Mazda3 is in the fleet for comparison. Word is that the Malibu ECO is a fail but you could use another mid-size sedan...maybe wait till the standard Malidbu comes out.

autoboy1 says:

@throwback

The 2.5 is a decent engine. It's a bit course and lacks fuel economy compared to new engines. It will be replaced with a 1.8L turbo in a lot of VW's cars so I don't see much point in doing a test on one. I'm not sure I see a point in doing a Beetle since it is likely to be much like the GTI, but ok. I guess you get them for free.

I would like to see the 328i followed up by an ATS 6 months later.

The Evoque could be really interesting so I vote for that too.

Someone mentioned a Passat. I think they should wait a year until the 1.8t arrives and then give it a spin. The diesel has been written about a lot, and the VR6 isn't a volume model but would be fun.

csubowtie says:

Of the ones mentioned, I would prefer the Malibu the most, it seems more relevant. An iQ would be interesting, and of course one of the Toyobaru twins. An ATS is a must have I think, while a 3 series seems like it will be old hat from the get go. BMW's get soo much press I doubt you guys will say anything we won't have heard a million times already. I would like to see some kind of truck, preferably a small one, but I'm not sure there is anything new out there. Have you guys ever done a Transit Connect? That could be cool, you could even get one with that tool system and tag it to photo equipment or something. And I'm still waiting on that Grand National.

zoomzoom22 says:

12:29 PM, 02/15/12

I like the GS350 idea. The Evoque is cool but reading about it would be boring...it is more of a fashion accessory than a real car.

I'd like to see a Jaguar in the fleet! Oh, and no more BMW's, please!!!

zoomzoom22 says:

12:36 PM, 02/15/12

Also, in the future you guys should definitely get an ATS...maybe wait to get the 328 until you can get an ATS as well for some direct comparisons. I'd love to read about which car you guys like better over the course of a year to see if the ATS really is as competent a 3-series competitor as the GM guys are claiming.

I'd only be interested in a new 3-series if there was an ATS there as well. Otherwise I'm getting a little sick of hearing about BMWs....I skipped over every 5-series post from this blog and will likely skip over every X3 post as well.

Other future cars for the LTRT Blog should include the Dart and Mazda CX-5. I'd love to read about the base model CX-5 with the manual transmission.

I'll second a good chunk of what some others have been saying with the Charger and ATS, and some flavor of the 86. Definitely the Dart once it hits, too. Let's throw in a '13 GT500 too, for ridiculousness.

bankerdanny says:

12:47 PM, 02/15/12

Add me to the Evoque list. Not very practical, but an interesting contrast to the Explorer, with which it shares some powertrain components.

My initial reaction to the 328 was no, IL tests way too many BMW's. But on greater reflection, you have the first really significant new engine in a 3 series in years and I would be interested in a lont term opinion on the turbo 4. Especially from a place like IL that has lots and lots of seat time in Audis and other BMW's.

IL really does need to do a long-term Focus, although waiting for an ST is worth while.

Yes to the Dodge. The only affordable V8 powered sedan left, do it.

I would be really excited to read about the GS350. I was checking one out at a recent auto show and was amazed at the strides that Lexus has made with it. I'm not a fan of the way it looks, but if it drives as well as its interior is built it could be a real winner.

I also would be really interested in reading about the face-lifted MB C-Class. You guys had that C300 a few years back and I would like to see your opinions on the dramatically improved 2012 model. I had one for a loaner last week when my car was in for service and was absolutely blown away by how much it has improved.

Lastly, contrary to what many on here are wishing for I hope you do NOT get a Jaguar. They are achingly beautiful cars and great to drive, but I know 4 people who have had modern Jags (2 XFs, 1 XJ, and 1 XK) and all were nightmares. One of the XFs actually had a slight engine fire due to improper wiring. It is better to admire Jaguars from a distance. ;)

I would like to hear about the 328i and the GS350. The 328 is a big deal -- first 3-Series redesign since 2007, a new engine that supposedly exceeds the performance of the NA inline 6 and the fuel economy of the diesel 335d. All the initial reviews have been positive, but nothing gives you a better understanding of a car than living with it for a whole year. The GS350 has been pitched as a new direction for Lexus and has also had very strong initial reviews. You recently had a 528i in your fleet, so it'd be interesting to compare the two.

2012 Hyundai Elantra - I can't believe you haven't had one long-term. Why get more low-volume sellers? I want to know what this car is like to live with.

Also, down the road:

-a Scion FR-S (cause it's about damn time someone besides Mazda built a real-ass sports car)

-a mid-level new Fusion (who wouldn't be interested in this?)

-a Lotus Evora (or an Elise)

-a base model Toyota Tacoma regular cab, 5-speed 4x4 (someone needs to take a good, long look at one of the last remaining four cylinder, manual transmission 4x4 pickups available for around 20K...plus, it'll be good for hauling stuff)

One, already mentioned, the turbo 4 is a significant change in the BMW engine lineup worthy of a closer look. Second reason is, it gets 36 mpg? No freaking way this car gets the same hwy fuel economy as my lowly 2006 civic. And if it does, you'll find one in my driveway in the near future. I have a 100+ mile commute. The 328i is going to be an important car from BMW, it's their best selling car and the driver favorite (335 and M3 not withstanding). It's rated for 36 MPG highway which is pretty incredible considering it's performance. It's the new car of 2012 I'm most interested in. But don't load it up - keep the options to a minimum, like the E90 330i you had.

I'd also like to see the FR-S / BRZ and an iQ. The iQ is a design miracle and I'm so interested in it just because of that, it seems like all the car anyone should ever need, NEED I said, not want!

Of cars you can buy today:

(1) Focus SE 5-door with a stick, sport package, 203A equipment group and moonroof. Why? To show Mazda how it SHOULD be done! This is a selfish request on my part. Since Mazda refuses to ever build Skyactiv anything with a stick and any desirable options the Focus has moved into frontrunner position as 'my next car' thus ending my long streak of only Mazda ownership. After buying three in well over a decade of loyalty, it's time for me to move on and I'd love to see how a Focus holds up. Seriously, though, it would give a lot of your readership who keep clamoring for manual trans reviews in practical applications (keep reading the Mazda3 threads, the Straightline new car intro threads, etc.) something to chew on for a year. Also, let's face it, after having a Cruze now you need a Focus to see how it stacks up.

Beyond that...

(2) I would actually love to see a Charger in the fleet. Can a big, everyday RWD American car be relevant in the modern world? (I like to think it can...) Any engine would do. The V6 is the most practical, but people will whine if you don't get the V8.

(3) Lexus GS350 (any variety, but F-Sport would be nice). Did Lexus catch the Germans? Initial reviews say so... live with one for a year and tell us!

(4) Hyundai Elantra. Does nothing for me personally, but why not? They sell billions of them so let's see how it does. If you made it the "GT" version however... I would suddenly be interested (especially manual, sport pack, roof... see my Focus request).

Of stuff you can get soon, but not yet...

** 2013 Ford Fusion
** 2013 Dodge Dart
** 2013 Chevrolet Malibu (without the Eco pack! -- see below)
** 2013 Cadillac ATS (turbo variant, stick shift only just because you can!)

Things I don't want to see:

(1) For the love of God please stay away from the BMWs for a while. Yes it's a new 3-series. So what? You've had seven BMWs already (per the list @ right) and though they're a top selling luxury brand, compared to the rest of the market this is WAY out of proportion from a percentage standpoint. Just lay off it. For like... six months. Maybe a year. Can you do that please?

(2) Chevy Malibu Eco. No one is going to buy it. The regular Malibu is where it's at. And it has an all-new engine which should be tested too (as opposed to the Eco which is a rehash of the current 2.4/super-alternator combo). It'll be cheaper, drive better, be more practical, and probably match the mileage of the Eco version anyway (if it's like GM's recent version of that 'technology' -- and let's face it, it is).

A vote for the Audi A6 here, but order one with the 2.0T. We already know the 3.0T is a phenomenal engine and works well in the A6, but very few, if any, real-world driving impressions of the A6 with the smaller, more economical engine have been published. Testing an A6 2.0T for a year would also be helpful in that you could judge it against the smaller engined 5-series Bimmer you had for a year.

Wow, sounds like a big rolling pile of boring suckage on the way in (of course, I'll exclude the Jeep SRT8 from that categorization).

In light of this, I recommend some vehicles that have largely already been mentioned to balance out the boring, slow, impracticalness of the incoming fleet.

1. Ford Ecoboost F150 (or, alternatively, a heavy duty diesel equipped truck - you had 3 minivans in the fleet at once, a couple trucks wouldn't hurt at the same time, especially if they're competitors).

2. Porsche Cayman S/R - let's experience the most affordable and perhaps sweetest handling car that Porsche makes. What's it like to live with in LA?

3. Caddy CTS-V, wagon preferably - Can't believe you guys have never had one of these.

4. Mercedes Benz E350 - you guys have done so few Benzs that I'd really like to see how a mid-level Mercedes does over the course of a year.

5. Audi TT roadster. You need more convertibles, and while I'm not an Audi fan, this one is so different from the rest of the entry lux roadsters that I think it would be a worthwhile car to evaluate.

6. Nissan NV2500 van. C'mon, get a big 'ol industrial vehicle and see what its like, even if its only for a 3 month eval. Alternatively you could do a Dodge Sprinter. Your photogs will never have to worry about space for their gear again.

7. Acura RDX if you can get one. The CRV revamp is pretty solid, but its a boring class of vehicle. That chassis with better AWD and a V6 might be pretty cool.

Another vote for a Charger/300 with a V6 and 8 Speed.

The VW Passat would be interesting considering it is somewhat different than any Passat before it.

The 328i should definitely be done, but I'm not sure that right now is the time to do it, I would rather see that and the ATS as Long Term Cars at the same time for a better comparison.

Maybe a Buick, I'm undecided as to which one though. I don't think a Regal GS is the best choice, I love it but I think something like the Verano or a LaCrosse eAssist would be a more appropriate choice. Of course, if you do a Malibu Eco, there is really no point in an LaCrosse eAssist..is there?

The new Porsche 911 should be done at some point, it would be great to have the old and new together.

And lastly, I think the Subie BRZ would be a great addition.

Typically the rationale given for Edmunds to buy a car is a new model, new brand, or a significant new technology - it's why you guys ran a Smart Fortwo and a Fiat 500 when they were introduced to the US, the electric Mini E and sundry hybrids. That makes sense, as living with them is different than reviewing them.

Jaguar has been through some drastic changes lately, practically re-inventing the brand, and Edmunds hasn't tried either the XF or XJ long-term. That's amazing, considering the number of BMWs listed in the present and long-term tests that are pretty much updates of long-time models. Rather than another 3-series (which should be darn close to your 5-series and X3 in a lot of ways, as Carroll Lachnit pointed out recently), how about a Jaguar XF?

And before I'm lumped in with the BMW haters - I'm a paid-up member of the BMWCCA, and I've bought 5 BMWs in the last years. I just think you guys have covered the brand quite well, along with Audi. There's little coverage of Mercedes-Benz and I see the lack of Jaguar coverage as a huge gap in the premium car segment.

The cars on the list would all be great additions, but if I got to choose, I would like to see at least one (or more!) of the following cars:

1. Mazda CX-5, because I want to see how the SkyActiv concept holds up in a utility vehicle.

2. Prius C, to see if its fuel economy claims hold up and if the higher price would be worth it for a compact vehicle in the long run. The combination of size and hybrid seem promising, I would like to know if this is going to be *the* new small car to get.

3. Volkswagen Passat, because I want to see how it holds up against the Camry/Sonata/Optima etc.

4. Audi A6 2.0T, I want to see how this small engine works in a car this large

5. Chrysler Town & Country/Dodge Caravan: you've tested all other important minivans so far, might as well do the last one too and see how it stacks up over time (and if it does any better than the previous iterations).

And as a project car: an old Saab 900 Classic…lots to be modded on these to make them go faster, and definitely the most (last?) iconic car from the brand--at least in recent history.

I've noticed that IL is seriously lacking in the truck department. So, here's what I'm thinking... I know you recently had a Ford F 150 Raptor, which is the total "toy" end of the truck spectrum... Now I'm thinking you really, really, really owe it to all of us truck guys to do a Long Term test of an F 150 with the Eco Boost V6. Maybe in Lariat trim - Crew Cab configuration. Just make sure you beat the hell out of it. I'm very curious to see how those turbos hold up over a year or more.

And of course there is always my earlier suggestion about getting either a used Ford Excursion (V10 or Diesel) or a new 3/4 ton Suburban SUV.

My vote would be for the CTS wagon. While the V version would be awesome, the mileage isn't practical.

A 300 would be nice too.

I can't believe how many of you creeps want to see a Focus with the "POWARSHIFT!!!" Thanks to every review out there, we already know it sucks for anything but basic commuting, and it's sometimes suspect at even that. It's time to throw some light on the fact that Ford still offers a pretty good manual in a decently contented car at a reasonable price: the SE. The Titanium is just another example of a loaded small car at a pricepoint overlapping larger offerings. The ST would be nifty, but I'd rather see what a mainline Focus is like to live with.

Like I already mentioned, you haven't done a small pickup, so grab a base model regular cab, 5-speed, 4x4 Tacoma.

Actually, you could set a price limit for around $20,000.00 and buy the best manual transmission-ed car and 4x4 pickup you can get for that. Both the Focus SE, 5spd, sport package and the aforementioned Taco fit that bill, but it'd be fun to see what else is available in that bracket. I know the only alternative to the Tacoma is the Colorado/Canyon "work truck", but I have no idea what Kia, Toyota, et al offer to compete with the Focus SE manual.

No more BMWs, they ain't what they used to be and I'm personally sick of 'em.

No more SUV/CUVs for a bit, thanks.

I also like the idea of the base Versa. I'd actually like to see you cover more small cars like the Yaris or Rio.

2013 Escape Titanium or SEL 2.0 EcoBoost
2013 Fusion 2.0 EcoBoost AWD

I think that you should get the Lexus GS350 F. 1. I don't remember you guys ever having a Lexus. 2. I think that since it is always always a popular buy, it would benefit people who are out looking for one to see how it compares up to old Lexuses and the BMW 5 series and Infiniti M that you guys just got rid of. 3. You guys always have a BMW in the fleet, and since BMWs have pretty much the same personality throughout the board no matter of price range, that it wouldn't benefit the blog to have a 3 series. I do agree with people in getting the Evoque and a Jaguar of any kind. They are always understated and should receive some more attention.

I strongly believe that you guys should buy a 2013 Shelby GT500, I Know this will be my next car, please evaluate and do a long term test on it. Make sure to test one with the Performance Pack, i don't think I will hit the track with this car but might as well also add on the Track Pack. I would like to know what you guys think of the glass roof and how it effects driving and the experience in this car since I am almost certain i want my Shelby to include a glass roof. Last but not least I would like to know how the Recaro seats measure up against the regular seats over time. I think they look amazing and I am almost certain I want these seats when I purchase the car but are comfortable enough to live with over time?
your next purchase should without a doubt be a 2013 Shelby GT500

I have to throw in my vote for the redesigned Chryslers. Specifically the Charger, 300, and/or Durango. V8 would be sweet, but also interested in impressions of the 3.6 w/ 8 speed. It would be nice to see how the Durango stacks up against the Explorer since so many reviewers have differing opinions on which is better. I'm also sick of all the BMWs...

And of course, Dodge Dart when it's released.

94-98 Toyota Supra( depreciation immune?)
2012 elantra (lets see how much frugal this car is)

2013 Genesis Coupe (more HP means better car?)

I will say the Impreza with the CVT. That way we can know if the claimed fuel economy is as good as they say, and see if the FB engine is as good/better than the EJ.

I will also add on of the the Subaru/Scion twins. Lets face it, one of those will end up in the fleet at some point.

Jaguar XF (give the Germans a rest!)

Having a new Fusion Titanium and a 328 at the same time would be interesting. The way you guys have been loading up your cars, the BMW would probably end up at $50k. So the question would be, is the BMW worth the extra $20k over the Ford?

How about project Subaru BRZ? Is it really a great track day toy?

doss1 says:

Pick up a 2002 Maserati Coupe. I've been going back and forth on the purchase of this car, and I need objective reasoning not to buy it. You can find a 6 speed manual without the skyhook suspension for under $30 pretty easy. Fuel mileage is dismal, but the sounds of that V8 makes up for it.

5) Honda CR-Z Manual

YES! I was so happy to see you guys are getting the 12' Beetle Turbo! I hope that you guys do get the 6spd though. We all know already what the 12' Beetle turbo is like with DSG!

Your review on that will be swaying my first brand new car purchase.

Veloster Turbo? I drove in the normal one months ago, nice bang for the buck. Add turbo and it will probably be a winner.

I would say get the Envogue, i'm interested in seeing what everyone thinks of it. I'd go with the 4 door myself
