Guess the New Long-Termer Based on its MPG

car-question-mark.jpg

So while I was amassing all the updated fuel numbers of our long-termers for January's big list of fuel economy, editor Ron Montoya also sent me the numbers for our new mystery long-term vehicle. Naturally I couldn't include it in the list since the intro for it doesn't go up til tomorrow.

But, how good a guesser are you? Can you guess what the new long-termer is just based on its best, worst and average? By the way, the above photo is just clip art.

Hit the jump for the mpg.

Best: 21.5

Worst: 16.6 (First Fill)

Average: 19.6

Hint -- Combined EPA: 21

Chrysler 300 V6?

@dph1: I hope the Chrysler gets way better milage than that. Especially the V6.

Maybe the Infiniti QX?

zman24 says:

Seeing as how you just got rid of the Sienna, I'm betting in a Chrysler T & C.

I hope its a charger. They need a big 'Merican sedan in the fleet.

Another vote for the F-150 ecoboost.

A Dacia Sandero

dph1 says:

12:41 PM, 02/ 2/12

I am pretty sure the F-150 is 19 combined for ecoboost. That does not match up to the 21 combined epa provided.

I am sticking with my 300 :)

That's not just 'clip art', that's the Scion iQ, and now I can't think of what would actually get 20-21 mpg. Gotta be a truck/suv, V6 probably, or a v8 sedan...I'll go with ecoboost Ford F150.

stovt001 says:

12:54 PM, 02/ 2/12

If it is the F150, don't forget according to Ford's brilliant commercials, it's pronounced "echo-boost" and is at least as fast as every single other car out on the road!

isend2c says:

Saab 9-5 Aero!

aspade says:

01:00 PM, 02/ 2/12

Being Edmunds, it's either a BMW or a Mitsubishi.

The only Mitsubishi rated at 21 mpg is the V6 Outlander. And they already had two of those.

So my guess is a BMW X3.

based on what you currently have, i'm guessing some type of truck.

A Charger would be nice especially a R/T, but a clip art of the iQ?

jstandefer says:

aspade: Now, now... they did have three Lancers, so why not another Outlander? LOL

My guess is the new Porsche 911.

mercedesfan says:

@sideswiper,

The ML350 only gets 19mpg combined and the ML350 Bluetec gets 22mpg so it doesn't work. Besides, MB doesn't provide free-loaner vehicles to the press and I don't think IL has a budget for something so expensive.

Has anyone said the Sierra/Silverado hybrid? I'm going to go with that.

jdmo says:

01:40 PM, 02/ 2/12

Check EPA's website on combined fuel economy I would say its either
1. Dodge/Chrysler Caravan
2. Audi TT RS
3. Audi A6/A7
4. VW Golf R

I looked at trucks and its possible but most had a combined of 18-19 according to EPA
I would like to see a Chrysler or Dodge with the new 8 speed, it would be nice to see how the 31mpg is true or not. Or a Durango V6 would be an awesome comparison to the Explorer that's currently in the fleet. Excited to see what it is.

Ford F-150 Ecoboost Crewcab
Dodge Durango V6
BMW X3
Honda Pilot Touring
VW Touareg

jasond52 says:

You guys don't have a truck. The GMC/Chevy hybrid trucks get 21 combined so that's my guess.

boobylortez says:

I'll say Audi TT RS.

cah11705 says:

After looking at all new cars which get 21 MPG combined, I'm gonna go with it being a Charger/300. but I still hope it's a new 911.

litewerk says:

03:14 PM, 02/ 2/12

Like some others, I'm really hoping it's a new Dodge Charger. However, my guess is a new Dodge Grand Caravan R/T! Which sounds pretty cool for a minivan.

Toyota Prius V! The best car on Earth!

jdmo says:

04:13 PM, 02/ 2/12

Its no way its a Prius V. Ill add that there's a good possibility its a Chevy/GMC Hybrid Truck...if it is I want it to smash all Prius' that drive 60 in the fast lane and other Prius that have Asshat drivers. Everyone has experience one in their life.

emajor says:

Thank God that silhouette is not the car. I like small cars, but I certainly am not jonesing for a year long test of the iQ

braco says:

To all those saying F150 Eco-boost, they already have one in the long term fleet.

diondi says:

05:55 PM, 02/ 2/12

I would be so very happy for a Golf R.

explorerx4 says:

06:23 PM, 02/ 2/12

I'm pretty good at multiple choice tests, so I'm guessing Durango.
Chrysler is under represented.

Range Rover Evoque. My neighbour has one and those are the exact numbers he gets.

jarede34 says:

Jaguar XF or BMW X3 x35i.

dph1 says:

07:34 PM, 02/ 2/12

Well, I was for sure wrong. I did not realize the 8 speed 300 is already for sale (duh). The five speed is 21 combined. The 8 speed is 23. So, my new guess is to side with aspade and go with the X3, which is most likely wrong based on my guessing skills so far today.

blueprint1 says:

Good deal on a SAAB 9-5? Actually saw one on the road today. Rare Swedes.

Gas was 5.37$/gal this morning. I'll keep my Sentra.
