What is that? See that itty-bitty storage thing behind the shifter and next to the cupholders. It's too small to hold a mobile phone. And it's too shallow to hold a pen or individual french fries.
Maybe it's a cupholder designed especially for Mini Me!
What could you put in there besides a few coins or paper clips?

Well I think I found one way use that cupholder if you are not Mini Me.
Ford fanbois: is there a particular item Mini Me's cupholder was designed to hold?

I would assume it's for a can of soda.

Nice try fellas.
The Red Bull can might fit with respect to diameter, but Mini Me's cupholder is too shallow to keep it in there. It will tip immediately.

Albert

It's not really "designed" to be a cupholder. It's where the Terrain-select knob would go if you got 4WD.

09gt has it exactly right.
I would throw my silver coins in there.
Might need to use them in a vending machine or the touchless car wash that won't read my card.

Kudos to Ford then for taking a space reserved for option and making it (sort of) useful for people who don't order that option. I hate getting into a car and seeing blanks for the various spaces where a button or knob would be if the car had some optional feature. In the Explorer you have a little bin to put little stuff in and you're not constantly reminded of the feature your car doesn't have.

it's for your cell phone, so you can get turn by turn directions while MFT is updating/buffering

That's where you stuff the microfiber towel used for daily cleanings of the touch screen.
