1997 Mazda MX-5 Miata: Wait, What?

It could very well be the case that there's a supremely cool Miata comparison test coming your way on Inside Line soon.

Just sayin'.

I love my Miata. I'm on my second one and hope to keep it for a long time.

I wish I could fit in one (6'3" about 200lbs). :(

@stromson: My 6'4" boyfriend fits in mine. He's all leg though, so maybe if you have a long torso, you won't fit. At 5'7", it fits me like a glove.

P.S. Yes, I am the quintessential stereotype. A gay man who drives a Miata :P

Hey - nice Miata Allroad - but it looks like the springs have settled a bit.

@carguy622 - Is yours the newest generation?

I can't decide which I like more.

I have to say I like the IL Staff car better than the overly tarted up orange show car.

Woah. There's like... a ghost there.

@jacton... "I've seen that overly tarted up orange show car" in person. It is very well built by the Mazdaspeed guys; it has substantially more horsepower than stock, very good suspension, and very wide tires (for a Miata). The roll bar, hard top, and seats are nice safety and driver retention additions. I can tell you it'll most likely beat my well-modded S2000 around a road course.

That "overly tarted up orange show car" is the MX-5 Super20 that Mazda put together for SEMA. I've never seen any performance numbers for it, but it is outfitted with a Cosworth supercharger underhood as well as a plethora of mods to the suspension, brakes, exhaust, etc. That has to be a fun car to drive, and I'm going to predict not much of a comparison when it comes to acceleration (assuming that IL Miata hasn't had its engine transplant yet). I won't make any predictions when it comes to handling... the third gen (NC) has to overcome its higher weight.

@stromson: Yes, it's a 2011 Sport model.

At 6'2", 250-ish pounds, I did fit in my Miata... it was a '99 (2nd generation). My hair brushed the roof when it was up, and I definitely had to wear a hat, else I thought my scalp would come off with the top down... but I did fit.

Of course, I also was told by lots of people that it was amusing seeing me get in or out of my car.

Every time I get in my Miata, I see the switch to disable the passenger airbag and think "maybe I don't have to sell this when the baby comes..."

And yes, I've also seen the show Miata in person and it is awesome. I eagerly await this test.

it is all about the torso though us tall torso'd men just dont fit in miatas =(

@spdracerut:
I was commenting on its appearance rather than performance. I have no doubt it will blow the doors off of the IL Miata but I like the understated looks of the IL Miata. All of the stripes and fender flaires on the orange car make it look like its trying too hard.
