2012 Mazda 3: When Will the Zoom Zoom End?

newmazda3-zoom.jpg

I noticed that our latest Mazda still gives you the ol' "Zoom Zoom" sign when you start it up. Mazdas have been doing this for years, so it's almost expected at this point. But it did get me thinking about the now tired slogan.

At what point will somebody at Mazda say, "You know, we haven't really used the whole 'zoom zoom' in a long time. maybe it's time to move on."

Sure, "zoom zoom" was an advertising tag line and a company motto of sorts, but even if Mazda still adheres to the idea of it, plastering it across the dashboard every time one of its cars is turned on is going to get old at some point, if it hasn't already.

Wonder what the dashboard will say then?

My Mazda 2 just says "HELLO".

I kinda wish these types of greeting were customizable.

Things I would have my truck say...

1. Ready to Crush!

2. Let's go already!

3. Damn it's cold this morning.

4. 330 Cubic Inches of eco-counterterror!

5. Let's eat a Leaf or two today.

Or "Ejector seat armed" to see how your passengers react.

“Stay away from hybris!”

That's interesting, my 2012 Skyactiv 3 just says "Hello".

My 2010 Mazda3 also just says "Hello" (and chimes too). When I turn off the engine, it says "Goodbye".

Ed, upon turning off you your engine, what does it say? "Mooz-Mooz"?

Personally, it should last a long time - just like "The Ultimate Driving Machine" for BMW, Zoom Zoom is Mazda and it should stay that way!

Better than their old slogan; "It just feels right"

“Stay away from hybris!”

No problem, no trailer parks in my neighbourhood.

LOL! Sorry firstwagon I live in suburbia like most people.

+1 to sxty8stang.

My wife made me a Mazda shirt as a gift. I opened it upside down and actually asked "What's Wooz-Wooz?" If I ever form a Mazda racing team, that's going to be its name.

The previous generation Civic Si's radio says "Hold on Tight!"

Ha! First good laugh of the month. That's awesome.

Interesting. Neither my '03 Protege or '08 MS3 did this.

No problem with Mazda continuing to use a tagline that still works. But I wouldn't want my car displaying it every time I got in. That would make even the freshest tagline get old real quick.

I think that the zoom-zoom should only be used on the cars that have some real zoom. Now, for Mazda that would be.........um, processing..............Miata, no....RX-8, gone....V6 six, hardly .......

My Mazda3 says "BOSE SOUND." Like I can't figure that out by the BOSE logo plastered on all of the speakers.

I wish it said Zoom Zoom.

So the greetings are different from car to car? That's odd

I can never get enough of "Zoom-Zoom" I got a decal on my rear window and everytime I look in my mirror it brings a smile to my face.

BTW ed124c, you're wrong. :-)
I love my 6 sGT and feel that Mazda hasn't abandoned their zoom-zoom principles in the least. They're only adjusting the recipe based on their aging demographic.

I've said it before, but if the 2010 6 wasn't available then I don't know what I would have done. For the price, practicality, reliability, size and driving dynamics there is simply nothing out there that comes close for the price. I can't wait to see what Skyactiv does to the mix, though I am a little concerned about putting the 2.0 4 into the 2013 6. Hopefully there will be a turbo or V6 variant available becasue I do enjoy the great power of my 3.7 liter 6.

Long live Zoom-Zoom!

IMO

@legacygt - at least on my Mazda3, I can turn off the greeting. But so far, I like it when it greets me with "Hello".

@ed124c - What @ocramidajzj said. It's less about speed and more about handling, nimbleness, and responsiveness. See also "Steering Feel":

Yep, my Mazda3 just blurts out "BOSE SOUND" along with a welcome tone -- barely qualifies as a greeting in my view. The tone is the only part of the greeting that I can disable. At least when I cut the ignition, the car has the courtesy of saying Goodbye...

wheelmccoy says:

I'm beginning to see a pattern. Those who upgraded to Bose speakers are unintentionally being punished with a "BOSE SOUND" welcome. My Mazda has stock speakers and has the good manners to say "Hello." Thank goodness it doesn't say "STOCK SOUND". :P

2010 Grand Touring w/Bose package. Display above is what I get when I enter the car with the advanced key and it stays on until you hit the start button, then you get the welcome chimes and the Bose welcome display as well.

@hybris
"3. Damn it's cold this morning."

Yeah, that would work in place of the 'ENGINE WARMING PLEASE WAIT' that my truck displays on a cold day.
