Mystery Vehicle: A Hint

picture-is-unrelated-48.jpg

So I've been charged with breaking in one of our new long-term rides. I know that's Donna's already got you guessing as to what they might be, but I thought I'd drop another hint.

Here's a video of a startup, along with a few revs*, of one of the new long-termers.

Any guesses?

*Because I know how pedantic you all can be, the vehicle in question was warm at the time and the engine did not exceed 3.5k rpm.

Well, it sounds like it's got a turbo. . .

Man, sweep out your damn garage! That's just disgusting. ;)

Also, teasers are lame. I no longer give a shit.

bmw z4 4 cylinder is my guess...

@uncanny_man: not at the prices they paid (if both are new cars)

My guesses are Hyundai Genesis Coupe and laugh out loud: Chrysler 200 Convertible.

I hear a Honda beep. I bet you its a new Civic Si

firstwagon says:

My wife says " sounds like a Hyundai". Don't know why as she knows very little about cars but I'll never hear the end of it if she's right.

gslippy says:

Well, it certainly isn't a Hyundai Elantra.

Mercedes C300?

mr_kelso says:

A sporty v6 coupe. Maybe a Genesis 2.0T?

allthingshonda says:

09:02 PM, 09/ 3/11

Audi A7. You know how much they love Audi, maybe more than BMW.

Sounds like a high performance V6 exhaust note and the A7 has a Supercharged 3.0 V6.

igeekone says:

09:23 PM, 09/ 3/11

Hyundai Genesis Coupe.

theace415 says:

i have no idea :/ all i know it sounds like a v6

skyggge says:

12:07 AM, 09/ 4/11

I don't think there's any way it's a Genesis Coupe.

Sounds nothing like my father's V6 Gen C.
Prices are not really anywhere near average Gen C transactions.
Doubt they'd get one 2 years late to the party, right before a midcycle refresh and power bump.

That said... V6 Chrysler 200 vert?

immortalized says:

12:33 AM, 09/ 4/11

i'm gonna go with 3 series convertible, but as to which exact model i don't.

dngirard87 says:

01:36 AM, 09/ 4/11

Couldn't be an A7 or a 3 series convertible, both are way too expensive to have been bought new at the prices they said. I'm hoping they managed to get an early production Chevrolet Sonic, but I don't even think one can be priced out to $22k. I definitely agree that it sounds turbocharged, it seems like a relatively small displacement engine to me.

par_avion says:

Sounds small, sporty and Asian: prob the new Civic Si or Veloster. No way they would buy a Gen Coupe this late in the game with a refresh due next year.

subaru123 says:

07:02 AM, 09/ 4/11

A loaded Subaru Legacy 2.5GT

rotaryboff says:

Sounds like a rotary, oddly enough.

cartester16 says:

Camaro v6 convertible. Maybe 200 convert with v6.

subarubiker says:

08:21 AM, 09/ 4/11

It's gotta be a Camaro V6 Convertible!

uncanny_man says:

08:23 AM, 09/ 4/11

I think I've got to go with civic si now. I'm still convinced that it sounds like a 4 cylinder, but it sounds like one that the factory was trying to make sound cool. Edmunds editors have long loved them some honda too...

BigFordFan150 says:

08:28 AM, 09/ 4/11

Id bet its a v6 and isnt a sports car. Kinda sounds like the Chrisler corp starter.

thedriver01 says:

09:14 AM, 09/ 4/11

I bet its a 200 convertible with the pentastar. Here is the dodge avenger with the same engine:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rwMmMMIi8ck

Sounds familiar anyone?

blueprint1 says:

10:03 AM, 09/ 4/11

Well, if the picture WAS related, that very ... gay rainbow would direct us to either an EOS or a Beetle with the 2.5 litre 5-banger to meet the 22k$ price point. A loaded Turbo Beetle would hit 35k$, but having just long-termed its platform twin (GTI), no reason to get that. Ditto the EOS, come to think of it.

I'm still voting for Veloster, though Civic Si coupe might be an option, but in Canada they are more expensive, 25-26k$. 22k$ gets you a regular, boring Civic (and why get that over a Focus?).

Out-of-the-box idea: a long-term send-off for the Mazda RX8.

bodyblue says:

10:21 AM, 09/ 4/11

A Civic SI sedan or coupe starts about 22K......and I really doubt the second one is a Jeep....I dont think they are available with the Pentastar yet and I doubt they would buy one with the old motor.

I just cant see them buying a 200 convertable....loaned one maybe but if they spent their own money no way that happened.

cantdrive92 says:

11:08 AM, 09/ 4/11

Definitely a cylinder.

I'd guess it's a 2012 Mustang V6 Convertible...or the V6 Camaro Convertible like Subarubiker suggested.

jacton says:

11:22 AM, 09/ 4/11

Im gonna wager its a Veloster.

threemopars says:

Wranglers with Pentastars are already on dealer lots, and have been for at least a month.

m3shmem3 says:

Not revving or over revving a cold engine is pedantic? Either that's a poor word choice, or you're confusing lack of ignorance with learnedness.

lostboyz says:

12:30 PM, 09/ 4/11

it is definitely a v6, probably a pentastar

ms3omglol says:

12:57 PM, 09/ 4/11

Sounds like it could well be a 2012 Civic Si despite the lack of idle videos on youtube to compare. It would make sense now that GTI and MS3 have both departed.

ms3omglol says:

01:02 PM, 09/ 4/11

Edmunds quoted price of $22,578 is very close to a Si coupe or sedan.

bkapps says:

01:53 PM, 09/ 4/11

Kia Soul?

bodyblue says:

01:56 PM, 09/ 4/11

"Wranglers with Pentastars are already on dealer lots, and have been for at least a month."

OK...the Jeep site is still showing the 3.8s.....could be one of them I guess.

V6 camry? V6 camry solara convertible?

70ss454_man says:

02:27 PM, 09/ 4/11

To me it sounds just like a typical newer Hyundai/Kia starter.

vta3 says:

02:38 PM, 09/ 4/11

I think I may have to go with Civic Si now. That starter sounds so Honda.

hda6spmt says:

03:31 PM, 09/ 4/11

i have a k24 in my tsx and the starter doesnt sound like that.... i dont think its the new civic si

sidx says:

05forenza says:

07:11 PM, 09/ 4/11

I'm kindof thinking that new Buick Regal? Whatever the high performance thing is..GS? Idk, its a Buick, i don't care. I could ptentially be way off lol. Though I think the starter sounds american imo.

pc123456 says:

10:07 PM, 09/ 4/11

well, they paid for it at least, so they can be honest about its faults.

lolxd says:

02:16 AM, 09/ 5/11

Oh how I wish they went for an Audi A7.

Guess they won't be getting anything close pretty soon.

I think this is a Chrysler 200. This sounds a bit like 3.6L pentastar V6 to me :)

lolxd says:

02:30 AM, 09/ 5/11

Screw what I said earlier. It does sound like an Audi 3.0 TFSI :O

biglee13m says:

04:46 AM, 09/ 5/11

well.. it's not an American. It'd have a deeper note. It doesn't sound like anything from Hyundai either. I wouldn't know about the Veloster but definitely not from the Elantra.

Civic SI sounds like a good candidate... maybe a used s2000? (hopefully)

lostboyz says:

05:03 AM, 09/ 5/11

One thing is for certain, most of you have no idea how different engines sound. Definitely not a 4 banger, definitely no turbo.

leftoflane says:

07:57 AM, 09/ 5/11

Oh great. My 2yr old daughter was eyeballing my screen and said "nice panda." That's all well and good, but how do I explain that there's a man getting his innards lased by its sweet rainbow breath? Huh?

"Oh yes, dear. The panda is the gay and lesbian special interest groups keeping the focus on same sex marriage and dictating a policy of public conversation that keeps us from addressing the real issues affecting society."

There. I can hear them minting my father-of-the-year award as I type. Still, all I wanted to do was read about cars, though. Nice job, Insideline.

jacton says:

08:19 AM, 09/ 5/11

"Wranglers with Pentastars are already on dealer lots, and have been for at least a month."

OK...the Jeep site is still showing the 3.8s.....could be one of them I guess.

The Pentastar Wranglers are trickling onto lots here in DFW. So yes, its a possibility.

cruisintopless says:

Hyundai Veloster?!

altimadude05 says:

03:41 PM, 09/ 5/11

Note to InsideLine: In the future do not use images of rainbow-eminating pandas, My Little Pony, Care Bears, or any other cute/questionable image.

It makes people squirm.

P.S. Please more Freddy Mercury pics! Thx!

stephen987 says:

+1 altimadude05!

Also: no Teletubbies, no Smurfs, and no pictures of tanned, shirtless guys. (Tanned, shirtless women are OK though.)

aquaticko says:

04:51 PM, 09/ 5/11

^^So why again are tanned, shirtless women okay and tanned, shirtless men aren't? Little biased, aren't we?

Back on topic, it does sound muffled in a turbo'd sort of way, though it doesn't sound quite staccato enough to be a DI engine. But you've already got a Cruze, and at those prices, that leaves...what? I'm stumped.

sergiosveron says:

If you see gay from that picture then perhaps you are suppressing something that is beyond the scope of a bunch of car guys. Please deal with it on your own time.

theace415 says:

09:45 PM, 09/ 5/11

Please let the car be a Ford mustang v6 convertible that would be great

Unrelated my ass. You guys got a Fiat Panda.

sniperruff says:

08:28 AM, 09/ 6/11

It's the Honda Accord Coupe FML or whatever they call it

bthayer23 says:

08:31 AM, 09/ 6/11

I'm probably wrong, but if one of the new LT vehicles were a MINI Coupe, that'd be awesome.

brokenaudi says:

10:35 AM, 09/ 6/11

Im guessing a veloster and a chrysler 200 vert. The car in the video sounds more asian than american or european, at least IMO. The veloster starts at 17.5k and the 200 vert starts around 26k, and you know how many options these guys like to add.

maastrichtian says:

03:15 PM, 09/ 7/11

So which one was this? If Jeep, some of these guys are pretty good. Nobody said Explorer.
