Note: Cars are sometimes refueled before their fuel tanks are nearly empty. As such, "best" and "worst" fuel economy entries above are not necessarily the result of an entire tank's worth of driving.

Do you guys still have the Traverse?

Cruze at 25.5? That seems much lower than I would have thought given it mission as a compact, entry level sedan, whose market peers are all (mostly) fuel economy focused. Also seems like very few of your vehicles get close to their EPA estimates. Is this a factor of your staff's driving styles or the LA traffic?

" Is this a factor of your staff's driving styles or the LA traffic?"

I'll bet the answer is yes to both.

Dang, look at the BMW's mileage. Yeah, it's a giant 4k lbs beast and it's getting better mileage than the Juke!

The VW TDI needs to be removed from the list. At the very least, a disclaimer is needed. You guys are constantly playing hypermiling games with that car, giving it a huge and unfair advantage.

On the other end, you guys are constantly beating on the Mustang (who wouldn't?), pushing it further to the other end.

Looks as if the Optima Turbo (despite its EPA rating advantage) is in line with the V6 competition in terms of its overall average. I believe the previous Accord EX-L V6 and Camry XLE V6 matched or exceeded the Optima's average.

The Miata gets the worst mileage? Your staff is havig entirley too much fun with that car.

dayz says:

the Volvo continues to get dismal mileage.

What you can take away from the list of averages is that if you want better than 30 mpg, there are 4 cars that can definitely pull it off. Since, as they always say: you mileage may vary, I'll suggest that it's still posssible for the Cruze to average 30 or better, depending on where and how you drive. And, maybe even the Mini, too.

Why does Edmunds present the list first by alphabetical order than sorted by best average MPG? Why not just post the sorted list and be done with it? Or better yet have an interactive table that allows the webviewer to click and sort as they see fit?

juke and optima are struggling.

Agree with "dayz" - as low as the Volvo's mileage is, that included a road trip that brought it up from ~19 mpg. Don't know if it's that particular car or a case of serious leadfooting, but I get several mpg better (~24 mpg, mostly in town / city driving) and I'm not exactly hypermiling or trying too hard.

stovt001 says:

Well, the Mini does better than the other crossovers, so I guess it does have a purpose.

bodyblue says:

07:22 AM, 09/ 2/11

The Mini does it by being less useful than other crossovers (only seating 4) so no, it serves no purpose1 :)

And the Fusion has vanished as well!

Does IL use the Mean or Median average? The Juke seems very low. I've been getting around 26mpg mixed driving and it isn't even broken in yet.

This economy list only is useful as a comparison tool if all the cars are driven the same way on the same 'courses'.

Having the VW used in several hypermiling exercises, while none of the others were, instantly rules it out as a fair comparison. Driving some of these, apparently, only around town rules them out. Thrashing the crap out of the Mustang rules it out.

What ya gotta do for this comparison list to make any sense:

1/ Go to a closed course (!)
2/ Thrash the crap out of all of them. Measure mpg.
3/ Hypermile all of them. Measure the mpg
4/ In a convoy, all of them drive a loop in LA traffic for several hours. Jump on and off freeways, but stay in LA traffic. Measure mpg
5/ In a convoy, all of them drive a loop on country roads (fwy and nice canyon backroads) from LA to Santa Barbara and back. Measure mpg.

Post your results.

Sounds like work, no? But at least we will get real data that can be compared.
