2010 Ford Raptor: Goodbye and Hello!

rapto_gone.jpg

I'm sad to see our Raptor go. I miss having an SUV in the fleet. But at the same time it creates excitement as to what we'll get next. I've always been a fan of the Defender, but it doesn't look like a possibility.

I look at the site bringatrailer.com almost every day. It's basically car porn. It's filled with the bizarre and cool. I find reading the site is similar to being stuck in a multi-hour Wikipedia knowledge quest. By the time you're done, you have 30 tabs open and can't remember where you started. But recently I did see something that grabbed my attention...

golden-eagle-web.jpg

A 1979 Jeep Cherokee Golden Eagle. I love the graphics, especially the eagle on the hood. It's  currently listed on eBay, auction closing September 2nd. I've always dug the looks of these vehicles, but I've heard they're like bug zappers. Beautiful to look at, but if you get too close they'll burn you. Still, it is tempting to have a project 4x4. Maybe we should look at a classic K5 or similar vehicle?

If you could pull the purse strings, what beast would you summon?

I would like to build a 96-99 2 door Tahoe, but my wife disagrees.

A K5 would be nice as well (and cheaper). Perhaps a military version?

I love Jeep's but I never found that style appealing. If I can get out of my '11 Grand Cherokee without losing a ton of $$$ I'm thinking of getting a Raptor in a year or so, miss having a truck.

Sorry, but this car just doesn't do it for me. I'd love it if you got a 1992 Land Rover Disco though.

Get a Jeep over any Rover......it would be nice to fix up an American car....you guys have German and Japanese now.....its time for a V8 with a carb!

Get rid of your 911. There is a 2006 CPO Cayman S at Porsche of Monterey for - well, they're asking $30k. 63k miles - looks nice.

Probably get it for $28k - you've spent that on the 911, now find out what that coin spent on a newer, non-garage-queen Porsche will get you.

Forget the pickups and SUVs - I want to see you go in the same direction you went with the C5 Z06 - cheap performance.

You can rave about the performance of the Cayman S without the qualifier "for an old car..."

Get an old Land Cruiser

Or an 'original' Bronco. There's a dealership on Lincoln (close to the Venice intersection) that sells restored/hopped up Ford Broncos.
At least swing down there and report back!

I think you should keep with a car that some of us might actually go out and buy. you are the experts, but if you pick a price range or a model year range and looked at what the top X number of cars by sales are, you will have an idea of what would be helpful to your audience. Feel free to pick the most interesting of the X cars on the list.

Anything without some sort of fowl graphics on the hood.

Well, if it's going to be a project 4x4, 75-77 Bronco, 302, 3 speed manual, power steering and brakes.

yeah, that's probably out of the question, so I'll second a couple of previous nominations.

raptor should be replaced with another new pickup. i suggest ecoboost f150, or a titan (very curious about reliability).

replace the 911! very bored with it already. its got nothing going for it anymore - how many car club meets can we be expected to care about? a cayman (as suggested above) or a 996 would be far more interesting. more 'relevant' to your faithful readers.

older vehicle to perhaps replace the 911, 4x4-style? a wagoneer would be very cool. defender 90, also cool. older wrangler? naaah. too common (prior tj owner here, btw). otherwise, an e39 m5, 996 or cayman, or bentley turbo r, to replace the 911, would all be great.

i dont even read posts about the 911 or the miata, fwiw. the 911 is too limited in scope, the miata lacks any 'lust' factor. the z06 , 308, m3, all kept my interest throughout their stay.

Get an older Tacoma, Frontier, or Ranger from back when small trucks were actually small.
Then at the end of its run you can determine if the extra size and fuel needs of the raptor are worth the cost.

I'm sure you can find a LR Defender in Cali. A 110" model would be nice. I still don't understand why you folks have not gotten a Ford Deuce roadster as yet. You are in SoCal.

Project 4x4: Late model Bronco 93-96, Ford Ranger 03-09, Jeep Wrangler any year, Old Land Rover, or really any domestic pickup if you're willing.

General Pickup (Used): Toyota Hilux, Ford Ranger, 99-03 F150, F350(Long bed Diesel 4x4) any cab type, Chevy and Dodge 1 ton diesels with long bed.

H1 Alpha.

I think another pickup is in order. A "freshened" Tacoma or an Ecoboost F-150, if you ask me. A used Jeep Comanche would be neat, too.

EcoBoost F-150 XLT Supercab...I built a nice one in Golden Bronze with SYNC and power drivers seat for about 33K.

Lets see if the worries about DI and turbos in a truck are warranted.

When I saw the old Landcruiser on BoT last week I immediately thought that it would make a great long term vehicle. It is similar, but to my mind a lot more relevant than a "rare as hens teeth" Land Rover.

http://bringatrailer.com/2011/08/24/blue-plate-1972-toyota-land-cruiser-fj40/

By the way, I think the 911 is the best "old" long termer ever, with the Miata a close second.

Graphics apart, that Cherokee is my childhood car. My Dad had a '74 two-door, with Quadra-Trac and a 360 2-barrel, three-speed automatic. It was the base version, with white roof and factory side stripes.

That thing was unbeliveable in the snow, but got 8 mpg in town.

Older Cherokees don't exist anymore in the rustbelt, eaten away by roadsalt.

I'd get that Jeep, or the later Grand Wagoneer Limited, the original American Range Rover.

Alternative: you're in SoCal...honor the location with a hot-rod, a resto-rod or a Cal-Look VW Beetle with twin carbs.

I could get behind the F150 Ecoboost. Couple of guys here at work have them - love them. Gutsy move by Ford that is paying off in spades now.

I like the idea of a used compact truck like a Ranger, S-10, Frontier, etc... I like the idea of comparing the usefullness of the overbuilt to the small fry. I think older 4x4's are going to be kind of boring. Don't get me wrong, I love old K5's and Broncos, but there is not much to learn there. They drive like noisy, uncomfortable, work machines, they have no steering feel, everything is sloppy, but they still get the job done. Unless you get a project one, but then it's all about money and taste, as they all have pretty much the same potential. And please, don't get a used Jeep. Jeep's are way too overdone in the enthusiast world. I can't take another one. Of course, if it's not a used vehicle, that CTS-V Wagon would be like the manly version of one of those books women read with the man-nipples on the cover.
