2010 Ford F-150 SVT Raptor: Room for Improvement

Raptor at Carmax 2.jpg I just got back from taking our Ford F-150 Raptor to Carmax and I was a little disappointed by the appraisal. The service was great and I was in and out of there in about 30 minutes, but I was expecting a "strong money," offer like the recently departed Volkswagen GTI.

Carmax offered us $35,000. Congratulations to "theace415" for a spot on prediction. I was expecting $36,000. Here are a few numbers to put things in perspective:

MSRP at the time: $43,300
We paid: $39,992 (plus tax and title)
Trade in TMV: $35,103
Carmax offer: $35,000

Our trade in TMV was very close to the Carmax offer. But if you look at private party Raptor prices, people are asking between $36,000- $41,000, depending on the miles.

Edmunds private party TMV for the Raptor is $37,493. The boss says he's in no rush to sell the truck, so we are going to price it aggressively. After careful consideration, we have decided to list it at $39,900. We have a more desirable color and the 6.2 liter engine (an option at the time) in our favor. Before you hit that comment button, please keep in mind that this is the asking price. We always leave room for negotiation.

How much do you think it'll sell for?

Gas prices are going to fall by October. It's worth to wait a couple more months before selling it for the market of trucks and SUV to get better.

What is a new one going for there now? That's the most important factor when pricing a slightly used car or truck.

I would take the $35k and run. I understand that there aren't many of these trucks around, but there are enough that they aren't so special.

I am often suprised at how much people will pay for a used vehicle. If a new one can be had for ~$40k, I wouldn't pay any more than $35k for a used one. I'm interested to see what happens.

I have seen nothing to indicate gas prices are going to fall much. The only thing that can be said is that the price of oil will be volatile. I remember posters saying a year ago that gas will be back below $3 a gallon by now........yeah right. This is the new normal.

$36500, is my guess. The Raptor is a desirable Truck, but i think it will take 2 months to sell

Ouch, you should bring it up to Vancouver to sell it.

I just checked Ford.ca and a new 2011 Raptor msrps for $61,319.

http://www.ford.ca/app/fo/en/trucks/raptor.do#

The few used ones on craigslist range from $52K to $60K.

$36.5k. It would have sold for $39 with the bedliner. Told you so...

Just can't believe someone would pay that much for a truck.

My girlfriends dad paid about $60,000 for his Roush Nitemare. Ofcoarse theres only 100 for that year.

Let me get this straight, you guys have it listed for $92 less than what you originally paid for it and you drove it for 30,000 miles?

Good luck with that.

"We paid: $39,992 (plus tax and title)
we have decided to list it at $39,900. "

A depreciation of $92? hahahahahaahhahahah
hold on
hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahha

on a second note... after checking pricing... it may not be too far out of line, you guys got a great deal on it new.

I'd have grabbed the Carmax offer too. Personally, if new is $40k, I'm not paying more than $30k for a used model. Less than 25% off is not worth the additional issues. There are a lot of suckers that don't realize the real price of new cars with incentives + negotiation and they pay way too much for used cars.

$37, 400 is the best offer you'll get.

Looks like everybody is asking crack pipe prices for these things. Good luck to you then. Seems way over-inflated to me but what do I know?

lji1 says:

I'd say price the vehicle aggressively. But dang.... didn't realize the Raptor held it's value so well. Well, since I'm not in the market for a new truck, good luck !! Maybe someone who has a real need for the vehicle will pony up the $$$

I would have taken the CarMax offer and ran. It would be different if your Raptor was a loaded Super Crew with low miles, but it's not. The 6.2L was optional for 2010, but now it's standard. The factory bumper-to-bumper warranty has less than 20% mileage left and the powertrain about 50% left. Add in the price of an extended warranty and a brand new Raptor makes so much more sense. I think consumers shopping at this price range won't mind paying a little bit more for one that's brand new. But then again, never be surprised what people might consider a bargain. It's shocking how few consumers do their homework when it comes to used vs. new. If it's used, it must be a good deal, right? Ha ha. Having sold cars in the past, I know better. Good luck!

I suspect the lower offer from CarMax has something to do with all the videos out there of guys casing these things over jumps and bending frame rails. If you expect abuse on a car, you're going to price some risk of hidden damage into your offer.

I'd be surprised if you get more than $37k for it. I'll say you get $36k for it when all is said and done.

gslippy says:

05:56 PM, 08/12/11

You're gonna get $35k, and you should have taken the Carmax offer. The vehicle has 30,000 miles, and you seriously expect to only take a $92 hit?

If you hold out too long, you won't even get $35k.

I'll give you twenty bucks for it and not a dime less.

cr_driver says:

A new one with the 6.2 liter (standard) costs $43K
With the major option group available (raptor luxury package), it costs $45K

Tell me why I would pay $40K for a used truck with 30 000 miles?

Maybe Ron Montoya is working on a commission basis.

ryster says:

01:13 PM, 08/13/11

$39,900? At least go get a spray-on bedliner to cover up the marred bed. Plus it is a functional mod that would make the premium price you are asking seem more reasonable.

done37 says:

01:50 PM, 08/13/11

Somebody will pay 37k for two reasons. First reason prices on the new lots are bloated to over 45k and the number two reason is somebody (not me) will want the cache of buying a car from Edmunds and getting there picture published next to the beast!

v8vader says:

07:03 PM, 08/13/11

you guys are ridiculous. i would never follow up on a used car priced so aggressively. time to reel in the saps.

surfwagon56 says:

Everyone complaining about the asking price missed the important info in the parentheses:

We paid: $39,992 (plus tax and title)

The "plus tax and title" before recent tax rate and registration changes would have run approx. 10% of sale price, so Edmunds probably spent $44K for the truck OTD.

If they sell it for $37K they would have lost a total of $7K over the year, not bad but not great either.

1198sp says:

Looking through the completed auctions on ebay, a 2010 Raptor extended cab with 24k miles just sold for $39.8k so it's not an outlandish starting point.

cheechmo says:

02:38 AM, 08/14/11

Yes, this truck is pretty cool, but are people really clamoring to buy these things? I just don't see there being a huge market for it. And as others have pointed out, if somebody has the money to drop 35k+ on a used Raptor, they will probably be better off buying new. I don't think they'll end up beating the Carmax offer by more than 1k.

greenpony says:

11:24 AM, 08/15/11

I think they'll get $38k. Keep in mind that their truck is in very good condition. "Like new" could apply. They also have a year's worth of blog entries, plus fuel economy history (important on a vehicle not rated by the EPA), should any potential buy request it. Also consider that they're in no hurry to sell... All these factors contribute to a higher selling price.

camaro84 says:

I'll buy it for $1 no questions asked. It doesn't hurt to be nice to someone... :) I need some luck in life.
