We've been given the word to put our long term Volkswagen GTI up for sale. So I took our long term Volkswagen GTI to get appraised at Carmax. We do this to set a baseline price for ourselves to either improve on in a private party sale or take the Carmax's offer. Take a guess as to what we were offered before you follow the jump.
Carmax offered us $19,000. For reference, Edmunds trade in TMV is $18,273. The Carmax offer is a solid price, but we think we can do better. Since the $19K is guaranteed for seven days, we will try to beat that by a grand or two in the coming week.
Any predictions as to what price we will end up at?

I'd be on it like a cheap suit if it was a 4-door GTI. Would've been nice if ya'll waited a little to get the 4-door.

$19K is really good but you might get $19,500 maybe $20,000 with the right buyer.

That seems pretty good considering it was about $24K new. When cars hold their value this well, I'd just as soon buy a new one. Look up new vs used Civic Si for another example (or almost any Honda, really).

Throw some white spray paint on the scuffed chin and it will sell easier.

I think $19,800 will be your best offer. $18,800 if they read IL.

Wasn't this used in the FWD burnout test?
Oops, shouldn't have said that. Sorry IL.... :P

$19k and you will sell it to Carmax.

If Carmax offers you $19k, that means they think they can sell it for $21-22k. Who would buy a used car for that much when you can buy a new one with intact warranty for a tiny bit more?

Resale on those GTIs seems pretty darn good. I looked at a few used ones and felt like the there's nowhere near the 40% savings you see on BMWs, Audi, etc.

I've always felt that IL's TMV undervalued cars. Seems there is at least anecdotal evidence to support that with the sales of the Z06 and GTI.

I doubt they'll find a buyer for more than 19k in less than a week. Prove me wrong, Inside Line!

$19k to carmax will win. That scuff will cost almost $1000 to have professionally fixed. No one will pay over $20k for it.

Local dealer is selling a new one optioned the same at 23k, PPL are retarded to pay that kind of money used.

I thought Carmax was expensive to shop @? Well to buy cars from. I've also heard they low-ball trade-ins. Anyone can answer that for me? I know certain cars they OVER CHARGE by a few grand. But the offer for the GTI sound really good to me. I'd sell it to Carmax and someone else will buy it for @ least 23 grand. (O_o)" No Haggle Pricing my foot. =) I guess people would pay extra to NOT haggle.

I guessed they'd offer you $15K. $19K seems amazingly good. I predict you'll be selling it to CarMax.

Who's the bald guy sitting on the bench, picking at his foot? His presence devalues the GTI so I wouldn't use that picture in any advertisements. I swear he (or someone very much like him) has been sitting out front at every Carmax I've ever been to. He is the reason I will never shop at Carmax. Well, him and the fact that they're overpriced and have lousy customer service.

Wow, any of my friends who have ever taken their cars to CarMax have gotten ridiculously low offers. $19 sounds great, especially with the scuff. You sure they saw the scuff when appraising it? =) You *might* find a private buyer who would pay more but I am somehow doubting it. Take the CarMax and run.
huyracing says:

wow, i'm trying to sell mine and they are totally lowballing me everywhere i go. TMV says i should be getting like $21.5k for it, but i am only getting $17k which is less than the TMV for a base model. to be fair, carmax would only sell my car for what the TMV is supposed to be, so its not like they are completely lowballing me, although a 4.5k profit is a lot...

Considering this is Carmax, which will bump up the price by at least 2 grand, I'd say $19K sounds pretty good. Take it!
