2011 Hyundai Sonata GLS: Skip the Tan

Sonata Black Int.jpg I'm not a fan of the two-tone camel colored interior in our Hyundai Sonata. I'm not a fan of tan interiors in general, but the camel color of our Sonata is too bright for my tastes. I prefer the black interior with the gray trim. However, if you want the car in Venetian Red, like our Sonata, the dark interior is not an option. If it were my money, I'd get the car in Phantom Black Metallic with the black interior.

Which interior do you prefer? There's a photo of the camel interior after the jump.

I agree. That black interioir is beautiful. The two tone is rather unappealing.

I like 2-tone interiors, and I'm a sucker for light seats and dark floors. Tan is a problem though because it shows grime too readily.

I'll take the black in a second. I think the two-tone looks fine, however the steering wheel looks so cheap when it's two tone.

I'd like to see the two-tone interior with the colors switched.

The only thing I would change in the bottom photo is to replace the automatic shifter for the 6 speed manual shifter.

Come on, people, almost half of the interior is black. Isn't that enough? The top photo is just too depressing, and it is hot in the Summer. The AC will work overtime and reduce your fuel economy.

As far as being hard to keep clean, well, I have had beige, tan, titanium, both cloth and leather interiors in my cars for at least 30 years, and I have never found it difficult to keep the seats clean.

Black is beautiful...

I'd definitely take the black interior, but I strongly dislike tan/beige anything. Or really any light interior in general for that matter.

Last year Hyundai offered a "wine" colored leather interior -- I"m not sure if they still do, but it looked gorgeous in photos (I never saw it in person). I'd love to see some more interesting colors offered by other automakers. Black/Grey/Tan gets so old...

Tan by a huge margin. really brightens up the car.

Black is so depressing and boring.....same with gray...GAG. Anything with some COLOR. Bring back blue or maroon or green.....anything but black.

Why do so many "sport cars" offer only coal bin interiors, which are hideously hot in summer, quickly fog windows, and show dirt just as badly as lighter colors.

Where does this manufacturer obsession with black come from?

Definitely the tan. I'm a big fan of the 2-tone look. In this car, the all black interior just looks depressing.

I'm definitely over black interiors. There's no better way to make a car feel like a bottom-rung model than to fit it with a boring, all black interior.

Let's look at two interiors...

The only thing I don't like about the tan Sonata interior is the two-tone steering wheel - it's a step too far along the two-tone path, IMO. I prefer the tan Elantra interior:

That said, I have the black interior in my Sonata and like it quite well. I don't find anything about it to be "bottom rung".

One thing that has impressed me is how well the tan interior has held up in your long term Sonata.

I live in Central Texas where black interiors resemble something like this:

Not to mention that many black or grey interiors are boring and depressing, as other people mentioned. Tan all the way for me.

"I'm definitely over black interiors. There's no better way to make a car feel like a bottom-rung model than to fit it with a boring, all black interior. "

I see the opposite - to me light tan/beige and gray interiors look like what cheap base models usually offer whereas I find black to be sophisticated, elegant and understated.

I agree I like the black but the 2 tone looks better in person... the pics dont due it justice... i worked at a hyundia dealership for a summer and i think both looked good...

Seeing how the beige interiors in the two other current/former LT Hyundais have held up, black is a good idea.

You should clarify, "not available on the GLS." I own a Venetian Red SE 2.0T with the black interior. I agree. I think the all-dark interior definitely looks classier and more cohesive. Sure, it gets a little warmer in hot weather, but I just crack the sunroof and windows. :-)

The Sonata is holding up very well......and it has been said by the editors as such......

Just came back from a road trip to D.C. in my aunt and uncle's navy blue 2011 Sonata GLS with the camel two-tone, and the whole every time we took the car anywhere, it felt like if you sneezed anywhere the interior would get dirty somehow.

The two-tone is nice, but black on black all the way in this case.

oxmead says:

Black interiors are nice except for one problem, most cars stop the black at the dash line and then have that sickening looking gray on the door pillars and headliner. There are some exceptions like my nieces older ford focus. So I'll go with tan . Like James Bond says " It doesn't matter as long as the cuffs match the collar".

clarkma5 says:

I hate how manufacturers won't let you get black interiors in so many colors, often the most interesting colors too. Black goes with everything, why the hell aren't you offering it with everything?

jm1212 says:

Hyundai would have been better off sticking to the black, dark grey/light grey, brown/tan interiors...

bluejuke says:

01:40 PM, 06/ 7/11

really depends on the car, when i test drove the tan interior elantra i wanted to puke but got in a black interior elantra and it was the nicest interior of all the cars i drove and i drove almost every one under 20k(focus wasnt available yet)

superm says:

If Hyundai had some cajones they'd offer a maroon AND a saddle (e.g. BMW or even Audi's Amaretto in the A8) as options...plain beige is boring but still better than a grey anything. MB I'm talking to you- gotta waste Ash.

As someone who drives around in the heat of July/August/September both at home (102-106F) and in Las Vegas (up to 126F in my last 4 summer visits), I would really prefer to see as little black interior as possible. I love my A3, but the black steering wheel is a killer in these conditions... even after parking in a partially shaded area. Dark colors are great in cold weather areas to absorb more heat, but NOT in the desert.

I will take the lightest interior you have, please.
