We dropped our 2010 Mitsubishi Outlander GT off for its 15,000-mile service yesterday morning. Long Beach Mitsubishi handled the maintenance quickly, competently and reminded us why we return there for our service needs.
The new oil and oil filter, new air filter and tire rotation set us back $147. This is one of the more significant service intervals. Edmunds Maintenance Schedule estimated $137 for this visit so a $10 difference wasn't a shocker. The price was fair. The service was satisfactory. We'll be back here the next time our Outlander needs attention.
Total Cost: $147.22
Days out of Service: None

Why pay the dealer to replace an air filter, when you can do it yourself for about 1/3 the price? This is one of the biggest rip off's at a garage.

^Agreed. How is $147 a fair price for an oil change? And what about an oil change, tire rotation and air filter replacement makes it a "significant" service?
Most places rotate the tires for a couple bucks and an air filter can be done for $15 and 15 minutes.

What else did they do for $147? I hope they washed it . . .

"This is one of the more significant service intervals."
All manufactures do this, for the 15k-mile interval visits (15k, 30k, 45k, etc...) the dealer will perform some "checks" (most are visual) just to see if things need to be replaced. Customers do reserve the right to tell the dealer NOT to perform those checks and just do a basic oil change. Looks like IL went with the whole package this time which imo, there is nothing wrong with that.

The stealership here charges $99.99 + shop fees, probably $110 out the door, for a cabin air filter. A $19 part that you can install in the parking lot in 5 minutes without tools.
Consider that an oil change and rotation is about $40 and that $147 tab adds up to me.

We all know these things can be done by ourselves less expensively. Hell, if I build my house myself it would cost less. However, do we really want to read a blog that tells us "I changed the air filter today." Many people, some of us included, have the dealer perform maintenance, especially under warranty. Therefore, I'd be more interested reading about how well a dealer performs and how much they charge. And I'd really like to not have to read "stealership" comment crap everytime IL has a car serviced.

This is the cabin air filter, right, and not the engine air filter? The engine air filter isn't due 'til 30K miles.
At my local Mitsu dealership in the Chicago suburbs, the oil change is around $34.95. Add another $30, IIRC, for the tire rotation. So $65. I use coupons to make that more palatable since $5-10 off coups are always available.
You can buy the cabin air filter online for under $20 & watch a Youtube video on doing the replacement yourself. Or, apparently, pay over $60 for the dealership to do it for you. They probably book a half hour of time for the job.

@carmudgeon.
There is big difference between building your own house and changing an air filter.
Sometimes IL performs their own oil changes, so why not a cabin air filter?
It would be nice to see how easy or difficult the manufacturer makes it for the do-it-your-selfer.

@clovism -- Your second comment is a valid and thoughtful point. Your first one comes off as bitching and moaning about something everyone on this web site already knows -- dealer service is more expensive than do it youself -- and changing an air filter is about the simplest of maintenance items.

@clovism -- Just wanted to mention I'm not singleing out your comment, I addressed it because you commented on mine. I just get tired of reading comment after comment about this every single time IL gets a car serviced by a dealer. If I'm the only one tired of reading them, then I apologize to everyone for complaining.

This post should be categorized under the Outlander GT (and not the Sport)

@carmudgeon
I could also say, using your logic, "do we really want to read a blog that tells us "I had the car serviced by a dealer today".
No, we don't. Whether the service is done by the dealer or an IL staffer, they will elaborate and give us details.
I'm not saying they should rotate their own tires or change their own oil. I just don't see this as being a more significant service as any other and, as we all know, they rip you off. $6 for a quart of oil and $50 for an air filter.

@clovism -- But saying that the 15,000 mile service, consisting of oil and filter change, tire rotation and new air filter cost $147 does have value if you're in the market for this truck and plan on having it serviced at the dealer. Its also of value to ask, why not have IL change the air filter themselves and tell us how easy/difficult it is on this application and how much you'd save. Bitching and moaning about dealers being ripoffs isn't news and isn't of value, at least to me. I wish I'd clearer about this in my initial comment.

$147 is ridiculous. Oil change $20-$30 anywhere. Airfilter $20-$35 depending on if you get a Mitsu or aftermarket, take 2 minutes to change. Tire rotation free at any Discount tire. Max price $80 with tax but most likely should be even cheaper
