2002 Chevy Corvette Z06: What Should We Get Next?

 Vette-Cowboys-2.jpg

As you know, we're trying to sell our beloved 2002 Chevy Corvette Z06. We don't want to, but after 15 months, nearly 20,000 miles and 197 blog posts there just isn't much left to do with our silver bullet. With that in mind, I took the Vette on a farewell drive. The drive took two days.

This is a great car. A car I could own. I love it. It makes me happy. It's comfortable and mellow when you need it to be and stupid fast when you want it to be. It sounds great, has awesome air conditioning and a huge trunk.

But, as sad as it makes me, our Z06 has got to go. What should we replace it with?

An NSX? A Defender 90? A new Ford Explorer? A certified pre-owned Audi RS4? A Prius V? How about an E39 M5 or a used C6 Z06? What the next car or truck you want to read about?

Would be so nice if you had the NSX!!! It was suposed to be the supercar that you can use every day, would be super interesting to see how true that is :)

I second the Durango. With the Pentastar. I would like to see what that engine can do in the biggest of its applications, both in mpg testing and hauling prowess.

An early used C6 Z06 for a great and timely comparison.

In all seriousness, I think either a used E39 M5 or a new Honda CR-Z would be good long-term cars.

An old Daewoo would be pretty humorous though.

If you're going new, I'd say:

If you're determined to go used:

CPO BMW 330, first generation CTS-V, Nissan 300ZX

I agree but likely for a different reason. Wonderful truck and I would love to read about it but not if it's just used to commute around LA.

It should be a used car (since it's replacing one) but it can't be one where the new version is better in everyway ( no one wants to read about a 2008 Caravan).

I like the idea of the NSX or better yet a Regal Grand National. (great contrast to the current Regal).

How about a 2002 Wrangler with a 4.0 and softtop/ half doors?

New: Elantra, Focus, Civic, Soul

Used: MB CL55 (same era as Corvette, more power, twice the cost when new, but now about the same price--interesting comparisons), Boxster S (compare with the used 911; which is the better buy?), and lastly, an E39 M5 would be interesting.

louiswei says:

considering gas prices a strong case can be made for getting a Focus or even Elantra. Then again, they will get an elantra for free anyway so go with the Focus.

If you arent concerned with getting something real people might actually buy then the CTS-V looks like a better bet.

The Defender 90 soft-top has been my favorite car for years and years and it would be nice to see you test one before all the decent ones are put to pasture or hidden away forever. I also throw into the running a 2005 Land Rover Range Rover - the model year before the BMW V8 was replaced by the characterless Jag V8 and its also the only year with that engine and pre-face-lift with better interior electronics (IE: touchscreen interface). Or hey why not try out Rolls Royce's new Provenance used vehicle program :) Let's see how the other half lives.

Still Defender 90 all the way. Y'all keep talking about it!

1966 Chevrolet Corvair Corsa, with the 4 carb 140 hp engine. Why? I owned one and it still seems like its the second best car I ever owned-- over the past 51 years. (My current Outback being the #1 car-- for different reasons.)

Unless you have owned a Corvair, you can't appreciate how sophisticated it was, and how much fun to drive. great clutch and shifter, great handling, quiet and smooth on the road. (It is actually about the same size as today's midsize cars, but it was branded a compact back in the '60s.

For a new car, I agree with 06scooby-- a new Legacy or Outback with the CVT. (the 6 speed manual is apparently a minor disaster.) I have driven Legacy/Outbacks with the manual and CVT, and have come to the disturbing opinion that the CVT is better. It does what the driver wants, not what the EPA wants. Quite impressive. And I have not bought an automatic in more than 30 years.

I wanna know what the semi-affordable, less sporty but still cool looking and reasonably quick WRX is like to live with. Does the 5MT it comes with ruin it (the Sti has a 6MT)? NSXs are way overpriced on the used market. Cool cars but unattainable (unlike a Z06).

And what's with all the S4 folks? Too small and not eally all that powerful, plus the quattro is a power-sapping AWD mess for those with no driving *skill*.

Because I'm in the market, the new Explorer or Durango would be a cool LT addition. I'd add the Jeep to that list, but at 6000 lbs I just don't get it.

Its like this....."please go 65mph...please"....and then you pull up to a gas pump and you have 450 miles on the ODO for $38 these days.....and then 65mph doesnt seem like such a compromise...or airbags...or rollcage protection....or AC.....or side impact beams....or advanced emissions controls....or cup holders.....or floor mats......

Buy another car that is attainable by the average Joe, but that the average Joe mostly just dreams about owning.

I like going with a pontiac g8 GXP 6-speed manual, a CTS-V, an Audi RS6, a BMW e39 m5 (my personal desire), an NSX, a nice used Land Rover or Lexus RX 470 (for the luxury off-road crowd), a C32 AMG or E55 AMG....

Choose ones with a good history but a good amount of miles too - i.e. over 60k miles.

...

Just to be clear: 3x as many used cars are sold each year in the U.S. than new cars. I think it does a good service to the readership here to share a really quality used car experience.

I have personally evaluated 6 of the cars of my list for my own use, representing a very diverse set of internal (conflicting) desires :)

Ryecatcher's suggestion is full of win. Maserati Coupe, 6 speed manual if you can find one. Just think of those GMR drive-by's with the Italian v8 wailing at 7500 RPM.

That and we all can get a pretty good idea of the long term ownership experience of an NSX or anything with an LS series engine. It's already all over the internet. The ownership experience of a used Maserati is steeped in a "if you have to ask you cant afford it" aura, behind a curtain of elitism that many of us haven't bothered to gain access to. I'd like to know how badly would the sub 30K Italian bite?

As a second choice:

- a British roadster (MGB, TR6, Spitfire or even a Jag XK-S

@ roadburner,

It is known that the IS F actually functions better on the tracks than on regular roads given its overly stiff suspension. It is actually one of the reasons why some people don't like the IS F, they can't stand the stiffness.

I assume IL wants suggestions on a "fun" car, used, under $30K, preferably much less than that. So get something less beat to hell than the Miata(s), and something we might actualy consider buying ourselves. Let's skip anything too close to any previously long-term car--which rules out STI, Lancer, Challenger, and G8 (GXP). The NSX sounds intriguing but really, it's just too old, too rare, and irrelevant.

My votes:
S2000
Prev-gen CTS-V
GTO 6.0

I almost like the idea of the RX-8 but it's really not in the right league (power, cost to maintain)

While I would like to see a first gen CTS-V (particularly the LS6 as only the 01-04 Z06 and 04-05 CTS-V share the LS6), I think an NSX would be interesting because it represented what the Z06 represents (mostly), except it did so 10 years prior to the Z06. Problem is, the car isn't that relevant now, so regardless of how it stacks up, it would merely be a "hmm, cool." No one is going to rush out and pick one up, unlike with the Z06.

Stick with the subject here - an older, legendary performance model that changed the game for a segment or a company! Forget S60Rs, XKRs, and new Ford Explorers.

I have a feeling the models mentioned are an edited short list. The E39 M5, NSX, and Defender 90 are older legends. Problems? The NSX and Defender 90 just aren't cars most of us would own, with their lack of practicality. If I wanted to dream, I'd read the new car reviews, and you have enough of them already. That leaves the E39 M5.

That said, this car's getting a little old at 10 years. And you already have a long-term review of the E46 M3. Repeat experience...cross out the C6 ZO6 for that reason as well.

That leaves a "certified pre-owned Audi RS4." Sounds like a smart buy already. Redefined Audi's performance offerings, practical, older but not old? Check. The all-around, everyday winner in countless comparison tests? Check - I'd love to see that explained in detail. And don't I remember a glowing video review from years back? Yeeees..Let's see the RS4.

IMO you should keep this spot open for an american car since you already have 911 in the fleet. I love when you guys do these long term tests on older cars like this because most of us cannot afford to buy these cars new. The NSX is still pricy but I vote against it replace the 911 with one of these. I can wait another year- year and a half for a test on one of these.

1st gen CTS-V Fast and luxurious. The 1st world class american sports sedan.

2003-2004 Cobra These are the coolest late model mustangs next to the Boss 302.

1st gen Viper. I can't imagine what one of these beasts would be like as a daily driver. You can pick one up in the high 20's easily.

But if you don't like that idea

CL55 Because it was $100,000+ car new and now you can pick one up in the $20's. Its fast and luxurious. I would love to see what keeps one of these on the road. Who can argue with the coolness of no B-piler when you roll down all the windows too.

E55 Its fast luxurious and again in the high teens to low thirties in price.

E39 M5 IMO the ultimate sedan. Also affordable.
