So what could you do with our Z06?
Because it's a relatively low mileage car in fairly good condition, and because it is a Z06 (they have much smaller production numbers) it could be added to someone's stable of cars as the occasional weekender. It would be a shame to turn this thing into a coffee table, but sadly that's the life a lot of Corvettes lead. It's a thorough cleaning and a fresh driver's seat away from living it's life in a climate controlled garage.
But because it's a Z06, it's also ripe for some track action. Faster than anything in this price range, you're just not going to be able to buy anything that you can drive to the track, pass a bunch of people and then drive home in for less money. Slap in a good seat, a roll bar, some belts and a good set of tires and use the car for what it was designed to do.
I know what I'd do. How about you?

I'm surprised nobody from the Edmunds staff wants to buy the vehicle. All of you seem to like it, why not put your money where your mouth is. ;-)

You're asking more than you paid for it, and you describe it as only "fairly good" condition, AND it still needs a thorough cleaning?

the z06 are fantastic track vehicles and if i were to ever want a dedicated track vehicle this would probably be number one on the list. with a decent driver they are consistently some of the fastest vehicles when i go to the track on lapping days.
but they are also a crutch (in the straights) for bad drivers...

"Slap in a good seat, a roll bar, some belts and a good set of tires and use the car for what it was designed to do."
That's pretty much what I've done with mine, only I slapped in a harness bar for the 5 point belts, rather than a roll bar. Actually, they really don't make a roll bar for the Z06 - only a full roll cage. I think - I gotta check on that. I was thinking of putting in a full roll cage, but it does compromise ease of entry/exit.
I try to do about 4 or 5 HPDE track days per year with my '02 Z06 (usually with NASA), and a few auto-X's too. It's a shame you guys never really took your '02 Z06 to one. The car is just so in it's element at the track. You really can't fully appreciate what this car can do by just driving it on the street - it really needs a high speed track to show you what it's got. The first time I took mine to the track, I was stunned. It was like I was driving a different car. It even sounded different. And this is after driving it hard on the street many times and thinking I had already seen what this car can do. Boy was I wrong!
Nine years, and 56k miles later, this car still provides lots of entertainment - more than what I felt I paid for. On the track, it's about the most fun you can have with your pants on.

What does the price they paid for the car have to do with the selling price?
bonzjr says:

While the fixed roof adds some additional rigidity to the (already quite stout) platform for track days, to me it's a liability for enjoyment on the street or as an every day product. Plus it's rather confining in the C5 variant.
Oh, and I don't have a spare $20k lying around for a toy right now.
So... pass.

I'd negotiate your price down quite a bit, put in a proper driver's seat and drive the piss out of it.
Of course, my wife would divorce me because I need another sports car like I need a hole in the head.

"Oh, and I don't have a spare $20k lying around for a toy right now."
Same here.
However, if there is anyone who can live with the Z06 as a daily, don't care about how much the gas cost and is looking for a car right now then I have to say that this is a pretty good choice.
Or just someone out there with $20k lying around for a toy, I am sure they are out there, it's LA for crying out loud.

I think the Z06 should be the give-away for IL's next caption contest.
When I win it, I'll use it as a weekend toy with occaisonal track visits.
igeekone says:

I hope the price is negotiable because asking more than you paid for after abusing it is not right. Only a sucker who doesn't know how much you paid for it would buy it.

Your price is a total ripoff. Maybe an Edmunds fan boy will buy it just to meet a few of the English majors posing as auto experts you employ there.
Either hold out for that, or price it realistically for it's age and use.

A used Corvette sedan isn't for me, but I'm sure this car would be perfect for a lot of people. Selling price seems a bit high though.

Hey, people, Edmunds has to sell it. Instead of griping about the price, give them a low ball price, or else stop saying that you would want it but the price is more than they paid. Hasn't anyone here ever bought a used car? You never pay the asking price.
It would be nice if one of the posters here bought it. Then we might get occasional reports about it.
I have the money, but I would never buy a car with a silver exterior and/or a black interior. And I don't like the styling of this coupe model. And, I think it has had, uh, too much abuse.
And I think that I would have more fun with a far less expensive 2000s Miata.

Hey, if they can make some money on the deal, why not?
I have enjoyed several used sports cars over the years and have generally not lost any money. Let the original owner take the depreciation hit, buy it for a song when he can't make payments, drive it for a year or two and sell for a profit or at the very least, a slight loss.
It's America right?

If I could afford it, (and Trust me, right after buying a house, a used Corvette is very high on my priorities list) I use it as my daily driver. And as an autocrosser. And use it to explore all the backroads in the pacific northwest. And drive to Colorado. And Vegas (family visits, ya know?). I'd also sign up for one of the several hi-po driving schools at one of the tracks. I might also end up in jail, with no more drivers license. Basically I would drive it like I stole it, but care for it like it's my first born.

There's an offer for you that's actually serious.
ptcdawg says:

Details on the Boxster...has it been fun/good car? I'm thinking of looking for a nice used one. The "hidden" engine sort of scares me.
joefrompa says:
05:31 PM, 05/13/11
PTCdawg - The engine is barely hidden...in about 10 minutes, I can have pretty much better access to it than almost any modern engine bay. You pop the convertible top into "service" position (2 minutes), remove the engine shelf/carpeting underneath by hand (3 minutes), then remove the firewall carpeting and an access panel to the front/side of the engine where all your accessories/belt drives are right in front of you (5-10 minutes for that one, but only if you need too). Changing the spark plugs in this car involves simply removing the wheels and then an allen wrench to remove the coil plugs.
I did a 60k mile service this winter (oil, oil filter, spark plugs, air filter, fuel filter, serp belt) for about $160 using parts from pelican parts.
There is only one truly scary thing: some engines have an intermediate shaft bearing failure (IMS). If this happens, the engine goes kaboom. It seems very rare, but it's happened a little too often for absolute comfort. There's a permanent fix out there - if you find a boxster with an LN engineering IMS bearing, you are golden - costs about $800 to do while the clutch and flywheel are being replaced.
This was my fathers and I've had it for 6k miles of driving pleasure. It's an incredible fun car - he put bilsteins all around, front and rear strut braces, and 18" boxster wheels shod in michelin pilot sports - the levels of grip go beyond obscene. 2800 pound car, mid-engined, 265 rear tires shod in michelin goodness, top-notch dampers, and a stiff chassis.....well, you get the gist.
Mine is worth roughly $13-14k and is a 99 with 61k miles on it. That's mainly due to things like the 18" wheels, litronic (HID) headlights swapped in, bilsteins, fresh 60k mile service, etc...
In other words - if you just want a fun boxster, $10k is there. If you want to step it up to a ~2003 Boxster S (the earliest year I would recommend if you have a higher budget), you are looking at 17-20k for a good condition version.
Hope that helps!

@ kevm14,
Yes, you have misunderstood me, what I was trying to say was...
For those people who:
1. can live with the Z06 as a daily
2. don't care about how much the gas cost
3. is looking for a car right now
Then this Z06 is a pretty good choice.
Personally, I don't care much about the gas cost but I can't live with it as a daily and am not looking for a car right now. I've always want a weekend toy but this is over my budget.
Hopefully that clears things up.

rsd makes a nice bolt in roll cage for the c5 coupe/z06 that is relatively inexpensive and has swingout/removeable door bars. dont know if youve seen it. i got one for my car. it looks good but i havent put it in yet.

for anyone thinking about buying it, I wouldnt worry about it being abused. I had thier long term 2005 mustang which was modded and was still more reliable than my 2 cars since. Only left me stranded once (air inlet tube wasnt tightened to the throttle body enough and just popped off). But maybe it was just so reliable since its a Ford ;) jk lol
