2002 Chevrolet Corvette Z06: Oh My, This is Embarrassing

Z06-Avg Speed-web.jpg

The Vette's Average Speed display can be cleared by pressing and holding the Reset button. And hopefully, at least a handful of times while with us, it has been. Otherwise, this slightly-faster-than-school-zone average MPH demands an awkward explanation.

Don't blame me though, friends. No, I whip the old SwissAmeriFranco snot out of this car every chance I get. Set the cruise control at 118, blasting Diamond Dave-era Halen and chain-smoking Gitanes down the length of the San Diego Freeway. And that's just on a weeknight. I really can't answer for my colleagues if they're driving the Z06 like the Leaf.

Damn Leaf - everyone trying to tow a rainforest behind their cars now...

That's very normal. For the past year in my Speed3 I've averaged 34 mph. And I live in DFW. Take into account every stoplight and congested highway, and your average speed drops fast. It's not "average speed while the car is actually moving" it's "average speed anytime the engine is turned on".

+1 skyggge -- I haven't reset the average speed on my 2007 Mustang since I took delivery four years ago and, with a 70/30 mix of highway/city driving, my average speed is also 34 MPH!

Amazing. Our Navigator with 96k on it has only had the average speed reset a handful of times. Despite dozens of long-trips and living in Atlanta where the average speed on 285 is about 85 mph (when it's not dead still), the Average Speed readout is always stick in the low 30's as well.

The average speed of my 2000 BMW 325 Ci is 33 MPH.

It was last rest in 2006 after I replaced the battery and decided to reset everything.

My average fuel consumption is @ 26.8 MPG by the way.

I live in the suburbs and commute 45 minutes to downtown every day of the week.

My average speed is about 19~20mph. I commute on 10 FWY, Olympic, and wilshire.
Who needs a fast car here? (well.. at least in my shoes)

Really? Dan's dedicating sonnets to awesomeness and everyone comments about how they average bicycle speeds too? Well, I can only add +1 to genius appreciation, but it is wholehearted.

Sort of makes our fascination for fast cars just that. A fascination.

I reset my average speed every time I fill up...and with probably 70/30 highway/city driving my average speed is normally upper 30's, lower 40's...granted I don't have "highways" like LA in Madison, WI...

Average speed on my company car is 10.0 MPH. I cover the most densely populated county in NJ. This thing never sees speeds anything but 25mph zones except for a 3 mile stretch of the NJ turnpike. Somehow my company/fleet manager doesn't see the value of a hybrid for territories like mine.

Average speed in my Z06 is always around 45 mph. Who says California is better than Kansas? I live about 30 mins from KC and I recently found out that KC has the most freeway miles per capita of any city in the country. What does that mean? It means our commute kicks your commutes A$$!

whoops, "commutes" should be "commute's"

I read the title, saw the picture, and the first thing that came to mind was that he averaged 31 mph with the e-brake on. Ah, well, it was funnier that way. That's the problem with averages, numbers take into account things our minds filter out.

My daily driver, a 1999 built in September of 1998, does not seem to offer up that kind of info. Will put out there that my last three fill-ups were 36.9, 36.5 and 36.9mpg. Includes some stop-n-go, but no real high speed nor really slow speeds. It's a Stratus sedan with the 2.0/5-speed.

My 2010 Mazda3s hatchback says I average 32 mph, and I haven't reset it since I got it. That's driving mainly in the fairly congested Seattle-Tacoma metro area. Seems like most people will be in that 30 mph average speed range. Unless you live in a rural area or go on very long freeway trips on a frequent basis, you're probably not going to have an average much higher than 30 mph.
