2011 BMW 528i vs 2009 BMW 750i: Spot The Differences

5_series_comp1.jpg  7_series_comp1.jpg I've been seeing a few more 2011 5 Series on the road now. Or at least I think I have. Maybe a couple of them were 7 Series. From a distance, it's pretty hard to tell. So to educate myself on the details, I collected some pictures of our departed 750i and compared them our 528i. I was actually a bit surprised on how similar the two cars look in photos. The pics follow after the jump.

I get them confused now as well, that never happened with the last gen. I'm sure 7 series owners arent too happy.

Nice to see that BMW is returning to "Same sausage, different lengths"!

Heh heh even I need a more than few seconds to see whether it's a 5 or a 7, especially if looking only at the profile.
And I have a 535i in my garage.

Very close indeed. Perhaps Bangle's out and same Wurst, different lengths is back.

I like that the 5er, at least visually, appears to have a lower belt line / taller greenhouse than the 7er. Hope that's a sign of the beginning of a trend of what is to come out of Munich.

I have seen several new 5s on the road, without looking at the badge I have no idea it's a 5. How much larger is the new car over the previous generation? The car looks huge.

I dont buy that "same sausage different lengths" is BACK.

The old 5er and 7er, think late 1990s, were both clearly BMW's but had their own looks none the less. Youd never mistake one for the other on the road. Even the 5er and 7er before that had clear differences.

I think BMW has somehow made these new sausages more alike than ever, and in a bad way! They are both smooth and rounded and a little droopy........nothing like the crisp strong BMW styling of the old days.

I think the 7 looks a lot better.

I miss Chris Bangle. The last-gasp 550i of the E60 generation was gorgeous and it was *unique*. The new cars... not so much. I won't lie, the new 5-series does catch my eye; it has its moments and angles, it really does. But something about it also seems so stodgy, now, so ... old-money. BMW is turning into Mercedes, and I don't think that's a good thing.

The 5er looks better than the 7er, but both are much too big and heavy. The last 5er I lusted after was the E39.

I too am beginning to think that Bangle did a good job. These cars just look blah to me.

It's like the engineers did everything they could to make them look identical, while preserving only undetectable differences so that someone could point them out if they HAD to. I don't get it. And somewhere Chris Bangle is laughing out loud.

If you think the exterior styling of the new 5er and 7er are similar, wait until you compare the interiors...

tjpark01 says:

The 7 is massive, on the road. These picture don't do the differences justice. The interiors however, are almost identical.

That's what you get when you pay a premium to buy a German car,
just like Porsche, the front of Cayman and 911 looks same at night,

agnh says:

Bimmers always had their own distinctive look on the exterior. The familial resemblance was there sure, but you could tell them apart. Until the 2000's.

kennypi says:

I was at the dealer the other week and they had a 550 and a 750 parked next to each other you really had to look to tell them apart, the 5 series has really grown. That being said the first thing I thought was boring, nice, but boring. The Bangle cars, love them or hate them, at least they stood out in a crowd much like the Cadillac CTS.

texases says:

I don't get the 'same sausage' comment either. I never had any trouble telling BMWs apart, any year, any models, until these two.

Yes, all BMWs look alike. This is news to who?????

The new 5 series is really growing on me though and looks really good with the M package.

Five is the new seven, and the new Seven is just extra large bs sedan
They changed their market strategy I guess, germans striving to make their "mid size"sedans a bread and butter models. New 7 or A8 or S class is too large, and people seem to settle for a model down which is not bad I guess. New mid size sedans are as big as extra large sedans 10 years ago. Besides, optioned up top of the line 5er is still a more value than base 7

Hate the front of a 7 series. Looks like a duck.
