We sold it to CarMax for $25,000. Now they are selling the 2010 GMC Terrain we tested for $27,998, almost $3,000 more than they gave us. This ad was spotted by Sodaguy, a reader of the Long Term Blog and, sure enough, the VINs matched. I'm just wondering if the new buyer will read our blog entries. For some reason, they don't promote the Inside Line connection in their ad.

Why not take away all their negotiation power.

carmax does not negotiate.
That's a tidy profit they are making. No wonder Carmax is doing well.

3k differential between prices isn't profit. The 3k minus whatever it costs CarMax to pay people, prep cars, move them around etc.. is profit. The price here (and selling price) are totally within spec for the Edmunds Price guides so it seems reasonable.

that markup to me seems low. based on normal human math, its only 12% over what they paid edmunds. based on retail math, its only a 10% mark up.
And thats not including all the costs they will have with selling this thing.

2-3K is required not to lose money. They're probably going to be about $1K ahead of the game, but they need to be. They wouldn't be in business otherwise.
It is kinda fun to see a car you sold, up for sale again.

@aerodax: It's probably because they can get more for it there or something. Carmax will shift cars to where they can get the most money for it.

wow, I thought they did more markup than that.
very cool that you found this on Carmax.

There is usually at least $4k difference between price Carmax will pay and what they sell for.

NO THANKS! I drove a Terrain for ~25 city miles yesterday. The transmission is awful and the center stack is an eyesore and ergonomic disaster.

The markup may be small, but I wonder if Carmax favors expensive vehicles so that they can make money on other items, like financing. ("Expensive" being relative, of course, compared to a $10,000 Kia, for example.)

I tried to sell my 03 Audi A4 there and they offered me $6K BELOW avg. trade-in. The car was in excellent shape too with no signs of wear anywhere. However, I had a friend who sold a 1995 4Runner with over 200,000 miles on it and a bad tranny. They gave her $4K for it, $3K more than what it was worth.

@jacton
You'll have to forgive carmax...they were educated in math in the United States.
